Man City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is open to a future transfer back to Italy, according to his agent Enzo Raiola.
Recent comments could see Donnarumma put back at the centre of another transfer saga, having left PSG for Man City last summer.
In this piece, we will examine which clubs in Serie A could potentially be looking to bring the sensational shot-stopper back to Italy and how City’s current No 1 has gone on in his maiden season in English football.
A hidden message within Donnarumma agent’s transfer comments
Juventus and Inter Milan could be Donnarumma’s prospective next transfer destination after his representative Raiola recently had his say on a potential transfer back to his native Italian soil.
Raiola said: “Today at Manchester City he is finding serenity with the team and the environment, and he likes the project very much. The other day he told me jokingly that playing five or six years there is an adventure, but it was a joke. However, if there is the opportunity to return to Italy, we will take it.”
Having cemented his spot at City’s starting keeper, ahead of fellow summer signing James Trafford, the Italian hasn’t taken long at all to settle in between the sticks at the Etihad Stadium.
While questions have been posed as to whether Donnarumma is making Man City weaker defensively, the statistics are certainly favouring the Italian keeper.
Only David Raya, Jordan Pickford and Robert Sánchez have kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than the Italian’s eight in the 2025/26 campaign.
Another standout statistic in Donnarumma’s favour is that out of goalkeepers who have played more than 10 league matches, only Raya (14) has conceded fewer goals than Donnarumma’s 17.
Donnarumma certainly can be considered to be best friends with clean sheets after keeping over a century of clean sheets throughout his professional playing career.
What makes that all the more impressive is that he had donned the gloves for some of the biggest clubs across Europe, including AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and City.
Which Italian club could Donnarumma’s next transfer destination be?
Inter Milan
Inter’s current mainstay in goal, Yann Sommer, has played in 19 out of 21 Serie A matches this season. In addition to all seven of their 2025/26 Champions League phase encounters.
However, that still hasn’t seen Inter offer him an extension to his current contract that is due to expire at the end of the season.
Is there arguably a tangible argument to be made regarding whether there is a hidden message if you read between the lines of Raiola’s comments?
Could Sommer’s current age (37) be a concern for the club’s long-term plans on and off the pitch?
Sommer has still only conceded 23 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this season. A move away from the San Siro after joining from Bayern Munich in August 2023 could now be on the horizon, with no new contract on the negotiating table.
Could that make way for manager Cristian Chivu to make current second-choice Josep Martínez Inter’s new number one next season, or could it be Donnarumma?
Juventus
Juventus’ current No 1, Michele Di Gregorio’s contract is certainly longer than Sommer’s, with it not due to expire until June 2029.
With 24 appearances across all competitions in 2025/26, including in Serie A and Champions League, Di Gregorio has only conceded 20 goals, which makes a move for Donnarumma look unlikely.
Juventus signed Di Gregorio from fellow Serie A side Monza as recently as this summer, and the Italian keeper has already made an impression.
Roma, AC Milan and Como have conceded fewer goals than Juventus’ 17 across the top-flight of Italian football this season. This has translated to eight Serie A clean sheets for arguably Juve’s number one for the foreseeable future.
Only Donnarumma, but maybe his agent knows the player’s next destination, but a move in January does appear unlikely.
Don’t expect Donnarumma to leave the Etihad so soon but that’s not to say he may not be tempted next summer if a move back to his homeland is put on the table.
