Man United Fans Have Their Say on Harry Maguire Wanting to Extend £190,000-a-Week Contract

Harry Maguire has had an interesting Manchester United career.

It started with him moving to Old Trafford from Leicester City as the world’s most expensive defender in an £80 million transfer in 2019.

Six years later, Maguire has 252 United games and 16 goals to his name. He has won one Carabao Cup, as well as featuring in United’s triumphant FA Cup campaign in 2024.

But the 32-year-old’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season and it is unclear whether he will be offered a new deal.

Maguire — who currently earns £190,000 per week at United (significantly more than David Raya’s new Arsenal wage) — is reportedly keen to extend his contract. However, United are unlikely to be willing to keep him on his existing terms.

The general consensus is that Maguire will need to accept a pay-cut in the region of 50% in order for United to consider sticking with him beyond next summer.

Man United fans react to Harry Maguire contract talk

News of Maguire wanting to extend his £190,000-per-week deal has triggered a strong reaction from United supporters online.

Some fans believe his motivation is financial rather than footballing, arguing that his salary far outweighs his on-pitch influence. One supporter pointed out that “he’s the fourth highest-paid defender at the club, earning more than Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martínez. The numbers don’t lie. His desire to stay is purely financial – his new contract should reflect his actual contribution on the pitch.”

Others were far less diplomatic in their assessment, with one bluntly writing: “Leave my club you incompetent slow prat.”

Harry Maguire’s Man United contract is due to expire next summer — does he deserve an extension?

A recurring theme among critics was the idea that Maguire’s playing style no longer suits that of United, with manager Ruben Amorim married to a 3-4-3 formation that favours pushing his defenders upfield. One fan wrote: “Time to move on… we can’t play a high line with him.”

Others echoed the same frustration in stronger terms. Another reply read: “You can’t ignore the fact that he is really slow. Even Grimsby knew that. You’re not good enough, so make room for someone better.”

Many also argued that if Maguire genuinely wants to stay, he should prove it financially. “He should take a pay-cut if he really wants to stay at Manchester United,” wrote one fan, while another claimed no other Premier League side would come close to matching his current deal, adding: “He is a Brentford-level centre back.”

Not every supporter was negative, though. Among the criticism, a smaller but vocal section of the fanbase praised his professionalism and resilience. One fan said Maguire “deserves every penny for being a true professional after all the years of stick he took.”

Is Harry Maguire a Man United legend?

Legend is a word that is used all too frequently these days. For some, playing over 250 games for a club is often enough to earn the tag.

Maguire currently has 252 United matches under his belt, many as captain.

While his time at Old Trafford may not have coincided with much elite success on the pitch, his commitment to the cause has never been in question.

Maguire was hailed as a “club legend” by multiple United fans in a video filmed by TNT Sports ahead of last season’s UEFA Europa League final. That video was played to Maguire on the pitch shortly before United were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur.

Had that result gone in his team’s favour in Bilbao then Maguire may well have rubber-stamped his status as a United legend. But as things stand, he remains a player who divides opinion among the fanbase.
