Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey joins Köln on loan

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Köln

Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has joined Köln on loan until the end of the season.

The move follows the early termination of an underwhelming loan spell at Celtic, where the 20-year-old England youth international made just one appearance as he struggled to win over a succession of managers.

Simpson-Pusey, who arrived at Parkhead after a promising 2024/25 campaign in which he made six appearances for City’s first team, undertook a medical with Köln over the weekend. He has since joined up with his new team-mates in the Spanish resort town of La Nucia, where Lukas Kwasniok’s side, currently 11th in the Bundesliga, are participating in a winter training camp before the league resumes on Friday.

It is understood that the terms of the loan include an option to purchase and a buy-back clause.

‘Jahmai is a talented player with experience at the highest level’

“Jahmai is a talented player who, despite his young age, already has experience at the highest level,” said Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler. “He enjoyed his footballing education at one of the world’s best clubs and is excellent on the ball. Jahmai brings a high level of motivation and a real desire to the club, which will have a positive influence on the competition for places.”

It seems doubtful that assessment would be echoed by Brendan Rodgers, Martin O’Neill and Wilfried Nancy, the trio of managers who took charge of Simpson-Pusey at Celtic.

Martin O’Neill’s verdict on Simpson-Pusey

O’Neill was alone in affording the centre-back the chance to demonstrate his worth, starting Simpson-Pusey at right-back against Kilmarnock in early November before withdrawing him just after the hour.

“I took a bit of a risk on him,” said O’Neill. “I thought if he could play as a centre half, he could play out there. He got off to not a brilliant start. I thought about taking him off after four minutes. Don’t tell him that!

“He did fine, and I think he got applauded off the pitch, which was nice. Not necessarily by me but, honestly, I was delighted.”

Simpson-Pusey looks forward to ‘a fresh start’

Simpson-Pusey joined City at the age of eight and worked his way through the youth ranks, captaining the club to the FA Youth Cup in 2024 before becoming the first defender to win the Premier League 2 player-of-the-season award. Now, after the conclusion of a torrid spell in Glasgow, he has the opportunity to reboot his career in a new league.

“The move to Köln is a fresh start for me, and one I’m really looking forward to,” said Simpson-Pusey. “As I looked into Köln and the history around the club, I wanted to get started right away. Now I’m looking forward to getting to know my new teammates.”

The centre-back could make his debut for the club at Heidenheim on Sunday.
