Barcelona returnee Joao Cancelo has generated more money in transfer fees than any other full-back in football history.
The Portugal international has plied his trade in Europe and the Middle East, with his cumulative transfer amount surpassed only by one defender, Matthijs de Ligt.
The Manchester United man holds the top spot with a cumulative transfer fee of around €200 million.
Joao Cancelo is the Highest-Grossing Full-Back of All Time
Joao Cancelo has had an illustrious career. He has played for the likes of Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, winning every major accolade.
At 31, he has featured for eight clubs and had five loan spells, generating a total of €145 million in transfer fees.
He played only a couple of matches for Benfica before Valencia prized him away on loan. After only 10 matches, they activated his €15 million purchase option.
At the end of his third season, Cancelo joined Inter Milan on loan. There was a €35 million purchase option, but Inter could not afford it. This allowed Juventus to swoop in and sign the defender for €40 million.

After just one season at Juventus, Cancelo moved to Man City as part of a swap deal. City paid €30 million and sent Danilo in exchange for Cancelo. The total deal was around €65 million.
After three seasons with City, during which he won a Treble, Cancelo moved to Bayern Munich on loan.
In the summer of 2023, he joined Barcelona on loan. His performance was impressive, but Barca could not afford to trigger his €25 million release clause.
For the same price, he moved to the Saudi Arabian side, Al-Hilal. Now, one and a half years later, he returns to Barcelona on loan. Cancelo rejected his former club Inter to secure the move back to the Catalan capital.
Cancelo Explains Why He Loves Barcelona
Joao Cancelo has played for several world-class teams in his career, but Barcelona hold a special place in his heart.
At the end of his loan spell in 2023/24, he openly expressed his desire to join Barca permanently. However, the move did not pan out due to financial reasons.
One and a half years later, Cancelo has returned to Barcelona and opened up about his special connection with the club.
“Almost all my idols played for Barcelona, and that’s why I like this club so much,” said Cancelo.

“When I was in Benfica’s youth academy, I played against Barça teams, and they all try to play the same style of football from the youngest players to the older ones.
“I really identify with it. Today I came back and felt right at home. I can’t really explain why I feel this way about the club, maybe it’s because my idols played here.”
In his first spell, Cancelo played 42 games for the club in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing five assists.
