Kylian Mbappe scored twice against his former club, AS Monaco, as Real Madrid cruised to a morale-boosting 6-1 victory in their penultimate Champions League league-phase fixture.
With the commanding win at the Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos have moved to a provisional second place in the Champions League table.
Madrid have 16 points to their name and will drop to third place if Bayern Munich (15 points) win their games in hand. Arsenal lead the rankings with a 100% record after seven games.
Kylian Mbappe Matches Cristiano Ronaldo Record in Monaco Routing
Kylian Mbappe, who came through Monaco before becoming a superstar at Paris Saint-Germain, delivered an excellent performance on Tuesday night, scoring two fine goals.
The Frenchman opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the fifth minute. He applied a clinical finish from the edge of the box, following a pass from Federico Valverde. In the 26th minute, Mbappe doubled his money. Eduardo Camavinga began the move with a clever flick, Arda Guler found Vinicius Jr., who carried it forward before squaring for Mbappe to finish.
It was Mbappe’s 11th goal in the league phase of the 2025/26 Champions League season. He is the leading scorer in the competition, with Haaland in second, having scored just six times.
Mbappe’s brace has also taken him level with his idol Cristiano Ronaldo as the joint-leading scorer in the group or league phase in the history of the tournament.

Ronaldo’s record-breaking run came in the 2025/16 season, playing only six games. He scored two hat-tricks in the group stage. The Portugal captain finished the campaign with 16 goals as Real Madrid won the Champions League.
Mbappe has been backed to make history at Real Madrid, and matching Ronaldo’s achievement shows that he is on the right path.
Alvaro Arbeloa Guides Real Madrid to Biggest Win of the Season
Real Madrid fans were treated to their biggest victory of the season on Alvaro Arbeloa’s managerial debut in the Champions League. Arbeloa fielded a youth-led starting XI, fielding both Arda Guler and Franco Mastantuono from the off. With an average age of 24 years and 152 days, it was Real Madrid’s youngest starting XI since December 2018.
Los Merengues did not dominate possession, but they made the most of their 49%. Kylian Mbappe scored the first two goals, putting Real Madrid 2-0 up before the half-hour mark. Vinicius Junior, who had been heavily booed by Madridistas on Saturday, claimed the assist for Mbappe’s second.
Minutes into the second half, Madrid went 3-0 up, with Mastantuono finishing off Vinicius’ low pass.

Things went from bad to worse for Monaco in the 55th minute, as their defender Thilo Kehrer scored an own goal. Once again, Vinicius Jr. played a part, as Kehrer could not deal with his powerful low cross.
In the 63rd minute, the Brazilian found the top-right corner with a brilliant strike, making it 5-0 for the hosts.
Before the game, Arbeloa defended Vinicius Jr. from boo-boys. On the pitch, the Brazilian showed why the Spanish manager feels privileged to have him at his disposal.
Jordan Teze got a consolation goal for Monaco in the 72nd minute, but Jude Bellingham’s 80th-minute strike ensured a season-best 6-1 victory for the All Whites.
Real Madrid return to action with a trip to Villarreal in LaLiga on Saturday.
