How Liverpool’s Losing Streak Under Arne Slot Compares to Jurgen Klopp’s Worst Run of Form

Liverpool Nottingham Forest Arne Slot

Liverpool lost 3-2 at Brentford on Saturday as Arne Slot’s reigning champions fell to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.

That result means Liverpool have now lost four of their opening nine league games this season, equalling the number of defeats Slot’s side suffered in the entirety of the manager’s first campaign in the job.

Liverpool’s losing streak has shocked a lot of fans and pundits, coming directly after they had started the season with five straight victories. Indeed, Liverpool are the first team in the history of English football to win their opening five games of a top-flight season and then lose the next four.

What Arne Slot said after Liverpool lost 3-2 at Brentford

Speaking after Saturday’s defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium, Slot said: “The most concerning thing is that you lose four times in a row, so it’s all about the result. And then afterwards, you’ve got to judge the performance, which today, in my opinion, was the worst of all the four losses we’ve had. And again, conceding a set-piece, not scoring one, makes it again hard for us to win a game of football.”

When asked why this defeat was the worst, Slot replied: “I think we didn’t do the basics right, especially the first half and during parts of the second half as well. I think they won more duels than us, they won more second balls than us. If you go here, you know that if you’re going to concede goals it’s not a surprise that one of them might be a set piece because this is one of their main strengths.”

Are Liverpool the first Premier League champions to lose four straight games?

No, but Arne Slot’s Liverpool are only the fourth reigning Premier League champions to lose four straight games while attempting to retain their title.

Leicester City lost five between January and February in the 2016/17 campaign. Manchester City lost to Bournemouth, Brighton, Tottenham and Liverpool in the first half of last season.

Liverpool themselves lost four in a row in February 2021. Those defeats came against Brighton, Manchester City, Leicester and Everton.

Have Liverpool made the worst start to a Premier League title defence ever?

After losing four of their opening nine Premier League fixtures — taking just 15 points from a possible 27 — Liverpool have definitely made a bad start to their title defence.

However, the record for the worst start to a Premier League title defence still belongs to Blackburn Rovers, who took just 10 points from their first nine games in the 1995/96 campaign. Meanwhile, Leicester City started the 2016/17 season by taking just 11 points from a possible 27.

What was Jurgen Klopp’s worst run of results as Liverpool manager?

Jurgen Klopp’s longest Premier League losing streak during his nine seasons as Liverpool manager was the aforementioned four-game run in February 2021.

That run was arguably worse than Arne Slot’s recent slump because three of those four defeats came at Anfield. Liverpool lost 1-0 at home to Brighton, before being thrashed 4-1 by Manchester City on Merseyside. Then came a 3-1 loss away at Leicester followed by a 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at home to Everton.

Jurgen Klopp’s longest losing PL streak Arne Slot’s longest losing PL streak
Liverpool 0–1 Brighton (Feb 3, 2021) Crystal Palace 2–1 Liverpool (Sep 27, 2025)
Liverpool 1–4 Man City (Feb 7, 2021) Chelsea 2–1 Liverpool (Oct 4, 2025)
Leicester 3–1 Liverpool (Feb 13, 2021) Liverpool 1–2 Man Utd (Oct 19, 2025)
Liverpool 0–2 Everton (Feb 20, 2021) Brentford 3–2 Liverpool (Oct 25, 2025)

Liverpool’s current poor form under Slot includes five defeats and one win in their last six matches across all competitions.

Klopp’s worst set of results in any six-game period came early in 2017 when Liverpool lost four, drew one and won one. That is technically not quite as bad as the Reds’ current slump under Slot. However, that period saw Klopp’s Liverpool exit both the EFL Cup and FA Cup, while also losing league matches against Swansea and Hull.

Has Arne Slot entered the Premier League sack race?

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have shown patience with managers in the past, but Arne Slot’s current slump has inevitably led to speculation about his future.

When FootballBlog.co.uk analysed the situation last week, the Dutchman was priced at 16/1 to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job. Since then, those odds have been cut to 12/1, reflecting growing pressure from sections of the fanbase.

Sacking Slot would cost Liverpool a pretty penny. As we reported last week, Liverpool would likely have to pay around £11 million in compensation, based on the remaining value of his contract. That would place him second on the list of Liverpool’s most expensive managerial dismissals of the Premier League era — behind Brendan Rodgers.

For now, Slot retains the public backing of his players and the club hierarchy. But Liverpool’s next few results could go a long way toward determining whether this slump is remembered as a temporary wobble — or the start of a crisis.
