Paul Merson urges Tottenham to sign Raheem Sterling

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur should be looking to sign a big-six journeyman, Raheem Sterling, before the January transfer window shuts.

Sterling has been without a club since his contract was mutually terminated by Chelsea earlier this month.

The 31-year-old has already played for rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal during a star-studded career.

The wide-forwards’ most successful spell came under Pep Guardiola at City, where he won four Premier League titles.

However, Sterling has failed to reach the same heights since departing the Citizens in 2022.

Nonetheless, former Arsenal man, Paul Merson, says a move for the Englishman would be a “no-brainer” for Tottenham.

Paul Merson says Sterling to Spurs is a “no-brainer”

Whilst some Spurs fans would be uncomfortable signing a player who has already played for their two-biggest London rivals, Merson believes a deal would help ease Thomas Frank’s injury concerns massively.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “They need players in. Thomas Frank and Tottenham have been unlucky with Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison all out.

“I would bring Sterling in. I think it’s a no-brainer on a free transfer. I really do.”

Tottenham are the Premier League team most affected by injuries this season, and Frank does remain short of options up front.

James Maddison suffered a season-ending ACL injury in pre-season, whilst another main man, Dejan Kulusevski, has not played yet this season as he recovers from a serious knee injury.

Merson hints at Spurs’ relegation fears

Thomas Frank’s men currently sit 14th in the Premier League table and nine points above the relegation places.

In discussing the potential move for Sterling, Merson also hinted that Spurs should be looking to secure their Premier League status with some January deals.

“You don’t want to start bringing every Tom, Dick and Harry in to try and stay up,” Merson continued.

“They just need one or two players in and get their players fit.”

Sterling would complete a rare feat with Spurs switch

Should Sterling make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he would become only the second player to have played for Chelsea, Arsenal, and Spurs.

Two-time Premier League winner William Gallas also featured for all three London clubs during his time in England.

The Frenchman started out at Chelsea before his controversial switch to the Gunners in 2006, and eventually moved to Spurs in 2010.

The move would see another big six club ticked off the Englishman’s list, and would see Sterling make more Premier League history in the process.
