Bergomi Highlights Key Difference Between Conte and Spalletti After Juventus’ Defeat Against Napoli

Spalletti and Conte

Former Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi has highlighted the key tactical difference between Napoli coach Antonio Conte and Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti.

Bergomi believes that while Conte has changed his tactics based on past results, Spalletti has stuck with his predecessor’s methods.

Bergomi Draws Direct Comparison Between Conte and Spalletti

Both Antonio Conte and Luciano Spalletti opted for the three-man defence for Sunday’s Serie A clash.

Beppe Bergomi argued that while Conte had players to excel in a three-man backline, ex-Napoli manager Spalletti needed to use a 4-3-3 formation.

Bergomi said on Sky Italia (via TuttoMercatoWeb):

I believe that this team, based on the players it has available, should take the field with a 4-3-3. It’s built to play that way.

What did Conte do? He changed his Napoli based on the past, while Spalletti has continued along the lines of Tudor, carrying on with the 3-4-2-1.

Arriving in late October, Spalletti continued with his predecessor Igor Tudor’s 3-4-2-1 system. His only notable change was deploying Teun Koopmeiner as a defender.

Ahead of the November international break, the manager said he would try different systems, even teasing the use of a 4-3-3. However, he has yet to make that call.

While fans and pundits have been calling for a switch, it is worth noting that Spalletti was unbeaten until the defeat to Napoli.

He has managed Juventus in eight games in all competitions, overseeing four wins, three draws, and one defeat.

Hojlund Takes Napoli to the Top With Decisive Brace

Napoli secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Juventus in their Serie A meeting at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday.

Rasmus Hojlund scored the opening goal for the hosts in the seventh minute, connecting with David Neres’ delivery into the six-yard box.

At the end of the first half, Napoli had an xG of 0.89, while Juventus had only managed 0.10.

Luciano Spalletti’s side equalised against the run of play in the 59th minute. Kenan Yildiz kicked off the move and finally got on the end of the ball to finish it off.

However, Napoli managed to restore parity in the 78th minute, with Hojlund once again providing inspiration.

The Manchester United loanee attacked Weston McKennie’s soft clearance in front of the Juventus net, heading it past Michele Di Gregorio.

With the victory, Napoli took their tally to 31 points from 14 matches, moving to the top of the Serie A table.

Max Allegri’s AC Milan, however, still have a game in hand. Allegri’s pragmatic AC Milan (28 points) will return to the top of the table if they can beat Torino on Monday.
