Thomas Frank Must Overtcome Tottenham’s Dire Recent Record Against Newcastle

Tottenham visit St James’ Park on Tuesday evening, but a dismal head-to-head record on Tyneside bodes well for Newcastle United.

It’s a treat for supporters of the Premier League on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the first midweek action of the 2025/26 season taking place.

One of three fixtures on Tuesday sees Newcastle vs Tottenham to St James’ Park, with the latter currently under the microscope after winning just once in their previous seven in all competitions.

Recent history has not been kind to Tottenham in this fixture, with the Magpies running out eventual winners in six of the last seven meetings.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Head-to-Head Record

Tottenham haven’t beaten Newcastle since December 2023, which saw Ange Postecoglou’s then-side comprehensively emerge as 4-1 winners, courtesy of a Richarlison brace. However, since then, Eddie Howe’s side have dominated the previous four encounters at both the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and St James’ Park.

Tottenham haven’t triumphed on Tyneside since Newcastle’s Saudi takeover happened at the beginning of October 2021. That particular win in the same month saw Harry Kane and Co win in a five-goal classic, 3-2.

Is Thomas Frank’s Job on the Line?

Another pointer to the potential outcome of Tuesday’s game at St James’ Park is the current rocky relationship Thomas Frank has with the Spurs’ support.

Following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Fulham, a chorus of boos rang around the stadium, prompting Frank to make some rather frank comments (pardon the pun). He declared the response from the fans as unacceptable and then went as far as saying they were “not true Tottenham supporters”.

“Brentford was in a different way, no doubt about that. You can say there is always a challenge when there are big expectations,” he continued.

“No problem with big expectations if you have earned the right to really compete for those big expectations, which I think it’s fair to say we haven’t done”.

“I said it near the start that we have not been able to compete in a cup tournament, Europe and the Premier League in the last six years. Now we are coming from a season where we finished 17th and did fantastically to win the Europa League”.

Another defeat could leave them teetering on the edge of the relegation zone once again, and Tottenham’s form compared to Ange’s sack season makes for worrying reading given they had two extra points at this stage. However, there remains a six-point cushion between themselves and 16th-place Nottingham Forest heading into midweek.

Given the significant investment over the summer with a total net spend of over £120m, this club’s hierarchy will no doubt be forced to assess their options, should Frank fail to flip their recent misfortunes.

Newcastle’s stranglehold on this fixture is bad omen for Spurs, and a midweek trip in December to St. James’ Park is about as far away from ideal as a struggling team can get.
