Nick Woltemade spoke after scoring his first Newcastle United goal over the weekend – and fans will be chuffed to hear what the big man had to say.
The former VFB Stuttgart forward has taken little time to settle in at his new club and hit the winner for the Magpies in their 1-0 defeat of Wolves on Saturday.
It was the German frontman’s first appearance for his new side and obviously his first strike and his header showed exactly the sort of talent he has that convinced Newcastle to fork out big money this summer.
Woltemade snubbed Bayern Munich for his move to the Premier League but the Bundesliga giants’ interest showed further proof that he was a hot commodity.
And the big striker may have pulled the curtain back a little bit over the weekend as to why he opted to make the switch to Tyneside instead of remaining in Germany.
Woltemade praises Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s man management
Manager Eddie Howe appears to have made a significant impact on Woltemade already and the boss’s man management style has caught the player’s attention.
Not only about football and tactics, either, as the 23-year-old revealed to BILD following his strike last weekend.
“He makes me feel good; I have one-on-one conversations with him every day,” Woltemade said of former Bournemouth gaffer Howe.
“They are mainly about topics that have nothing to do with football, like my move or how my family is doing.
“It’s a great working culture here.”
The frontman added on his living situation: “My friends are here with me, so I get a lot of support.
Howe manager record and future plans
“One of them is even moving in with me permanently. We’re very good friends and have always joked that if I ever move abroad, we’ll go there together. Neither of us has a girlfriend, so we have quite a bit of freedom.”
Woltemade’s comments have arguably told Newcastle – and English football more generally – nothing they did not already know when it comes to Howe as an operator.
The Englishman, 47, is a well thought of and highly respected coach in the Premier League having worked in the division across 335 matches over the course of his career.
And it’s clear to see why. Man management is an often underappreciated element of the game but it’s one Howe has down to a tee.
Howe has been tipped to become an England manager one day and has had clubs interested in him over the past number of seasons. His handling of the Alexander Isak transfer saga should also be commended.
Howe was minutes away from becoming Celtic manager before opting against the move due to his backroom staff refusing to join him.
New Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou would take the role at that time in the Scottish Premiership.
