Nobel Mendy Rangers Transfer Collapse Comes Down To Real Betis Disagreement

Rangers’ attempts to sign Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy have stalled after a failure to agree on additional clauses.

We at FootballBlog can reveal the Senegalese centre-half – who can also play on the left-hand side – was closing in on a switch to Ibrox after the player and his camp signed off on personal terms.

That greenlit Gers’ negotiations with La Liga outfit Betis and a flat fee of around £2million was understood to be sorted out.

However we also understand the deal collapsed after Rangers and Mendy’s club could not come to an agreement on the additional clauses in the contract for down the line including sell-on and performance based successes.

Why Nobel Mendy to Rangers collapsed

There is believed to still remain some hope from Mendy’s side to get the deal done but we believe Rangers have since moved on to other transfer targets in that position as they consider selling Ben Davies on a permanent exit.

Light Blues boss Russell Martin – whose side have not started the season particularly well thus far with just two points from their opening two games – is looking for cover at the back and that comes after a decision to sell one player.

Jefte, the Brazilian left-back, is understood to be closing in on a return to his homeland with Palmeiras.

News emerged of interest from the club in the 23-year-old who joined Gers from Fluminense for just £800,000 in 2024. That came following a gentleman’s agreement after he had a loan stint with APOEL in Cyprus.

It has been claimed by the Rangers Review in Scotland that a fee of close to £6m has been settled on with Palmeiras which represents a strong profit for the Glasgow giants.

Rangers transfer incomings and outgoings

His teammates Nicolas Raskin and Ridvan Yilmaz, could also leave the club this summer and head to Aston Villa and Turkey with Besiktas respectively. That would leave them short at left-back.

Certainly it would have, had they not just signed Brentford full-back Jayden Meghoma on loan to cover that side of the pitch.

Bournemouth star Max Aarons, also on loan at Gers, has been deputising on the left-flank but is not a natural left-sided player and has been accommodated due to captain James Tavernier playing on the right.

Meghoma, upon signing, said: “I am very excited to be here, it is a fantastic club, and I know a lot about the rich history of Rangers. When the deal was presented to me, I thought straight away that it would be a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family.

“The main thing for me is getting results. Rangers is a big club, and I am ready, I am hungry and excited to get going.”
