Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has picked himself as Egypt’s best player – past or present – although fans were quick to disagree.
Marmoush recently filmed a TikTok video for TNT Sports in which he was presented with seven African flags and asked to name the best player – past or present – from each country.
He chose Riyad Mahrez for Algeria and named Samuel Eto’o as Cameroon’s biggest legend.
Omar Marmoush rates himself above Mo Salah
When it came to Egypt, a cheeky grin spread across Marmoush’s face and he replied: “Me”.
But multiple fans in the comments were quick to tell Marmoush that he was wrong for putting himself above current captain Mo Salah.
The top comment had three laughing emojis alongside the words: “He thinks he’s better than Salah”.
Another fan wrote: “Salah clear of you lil bro”, while a third added: “Of course you will laugh… maybe he forgot Mo Salah.”
In terms of Marmoush’s other picks, he went for Kolo Toure as the Ivory Coast’s main man, Hakim Ziyech as Morocco’s, Jay-Jay Okocha for Nigeria and Ellyes Skhiri for Tunisia.
Mo Salah: Egyptian King
Mohamed Salah is affectionately known by Liverpool supporters as the Egyptian King after excelling at Anfield since his arrival from Roma in 2017.
Salah has scored 246 goals in 405 games for the Reds, firing them to eight major trophies, including a Premier League and Champions League triumph.
However, he has not yet been able to get Egypt over the line in an international tournament, despite reaching the final of the Africa Cup of Nations twice in the last decade.
Salah and Marmoush set for AFCON trip
Egypt’s next shot at international glory will come at the 2025 AFCON, which starts on December 21 and ends on January 18.
Salah and Marmoush are both expected to be part of the Egypt squad that will take on South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe in Group B.
Skipper Salah could potentially break his country’s scoring record during the tournament.
Salah currently has 61 goals from 101 international appearances. Egypt’s all-time leading scorer is Hossam Hassan, who netted 69 times in 177 games between 1985 and 2006.
Meanwhile, Marmoush has hit seven goals in his first 38 Egypt outings.
Salah gifts Marmoush penalty as Egypt move towards World Cup qualification
Marmoush’s most recent goal for Egypt came on Friday in a 2-0 win over Ethiopia.
That victory all but sealed Egypt’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup — which will be the biggest international tournament ever.
Salah opened the scoring in the 41st minute by converting a penalty. Egypt then won another spot-kick in first-half stoppage time and — rather than taking a second one himself — regular penalty-taker Salah handed the ball to Marmoush, who duly converted.
