The Overlooked Out of Work Managers Who Deserve Premier League Shot

The Premier League is one of the mightiest divisions in European football and it takes a certain type of manager to work well under scrutiny.

The life span of a boss in England’s top flight is short and patience is usually in relatively short supply from fans as well as certain trigger-happy chairmen.

However, that has never stopped ambitious coaches from dreaming of life at a Premier League club where the best in the world both play and manage.

Some bosses love the idea of pitting their wits against big names in the opposition dugouts.

Others enjoy the thought it takes tactically to shut down some of the world’s best on-field talent or stifling an unbeaten team to earn a hard fought three points on a cold and windy evening in midweek.

Premier League manager candidates who deserve shot

The likes of Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot would become equals.

But as we have already mentioned, dealing with the pressure would not be easy.

That could be why certain coaches who are out of work have not been snapped up in the Premier League even now in the midst of what has become known as manager sack season.

Here, FootballBlog takes a look at some coaches who have perhaps been overlooked by EPL outfits and the stats behind why they should be given a(nother) crack in the division…

Marco Rose

So far, Marco Rose has only managed in Germany and Austria but his credentials are not up for debate.

The 49-year-old has a vast amount of experience with RB Salzburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig where he has managed a combined total of more than 370 matches.

During his early career in the Austrian Bundesliga he won 82 of 114 matches with 22 draws and just 10 defeats from those outings. He won the league twice as well as the Austrian Cup.

That earned him his move to Monchengladbach where he won just shy of 50 percent of his total 88 fixtures. He would leave at the end of his second season to join Dortmund.

He didn’t have the best time there but wound up at RB Leipzig and won the cup double in 2023.

Erik Ten Hag

Wolves considered Ten Hag this month before opting for Rob Edwards and it was clear to see why.

The Dutchman may not have the best reputation in England following what was a disappointing end to his time at Manchester United.

However, he is a winning coach and even managed to secure silverware at Old Trafford.

ETH has seven trophies to his name and his Ajax team played incredible football before he moved on.

Sam Allardyce

Big Sam, we hear you say, can hardly be described as overlooked when it comes to jobs in the Premier League.

He has managed Bolton, Blackburn, West Ham, Newcastle United, Everton…. almost every club in the division. Even taking the England national team job and leaving with a 100 percent win rate.

But the experienced 71-year-old has been out of work since Leeds in 2023 and is maybe due another look-in.

Listen, we know it’s possible the veteran has been passed by in the league by the tactical up and comers and the analytics.

And yet, his no-nonsense style might have a place, still, and his 541 Premier League matches as a boss there counts for something.

Stefano Pioli

The 60-year-old has had an incredible career in Italy but his jobs have not exactly been diverse.

Pioli has managed 13 different Serie A clubs with some being given more than one crack at. But aside from Al-Nassr last year, the coach has not ventured outside of Italy to coach.

Should a Premier League job – a suitable one – become available, Pioli’s record of having bossed Inter Milan, Fiorentina and AC Milan among others, should stand him in very good stead.

He has managed more than 500 games throughout his career in the dugout and he is ready to go now.

Quique Sanchez Flores

He has had his shot in the Premier League before but with basket case Watford over two stints.

Even in that time at Vicarage Road, Flores was considered impressive and he has worked big jobs since leaving the Hornets including Sevilla.

Has 48 Premier League games under his belt as a coach and would surely like more in future.

In total throughout his career as a gaffer, Flores has a win rate of 40.1 percent from 618 matches. But he, for the most part, has bossed at the highest level.

Patrick Vieira

Vieira is a Premier League icon and was a mentality machine as a player with Arsenal.

His time in EPL management with Crystal Palace, though, did not have the same oomph and he struggled with an average of 1.22 points per match from 74 games.

Since then the 49-year-old has built momentum and gained experience elsewhere with the likes of New York City and Nice.

May not have the best win ratio from his 413 matches (40 percent), but he is still young enough to fancy another shot and his aura as a figure in the game should be enough to land him one eventually.

Laurent Blanc

Left Al-Ittihad in Saudi earlier this year and has been using his time off to brush up on his skills and watch the game from the outside.

The French World Cup winner, like Vieira, has the gravitas needed to be a manager in the English top flight and he has won big matches and trophies throughout his career.

With Paris Saint-Germain, Blanc lifted 11 trophies in three years and before that with Bordeaux he also won medals including Ligue 1, the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophée des Champions.

It is perhaps forgotten how impressive the retired defender’s history is in the dugout given he has been working in Saudi but he seems to have more than earned a move to England should he wish to make it.

Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick was being hailed as one of the country’s most talented young coaches as recently as last season.

The 44-year-old was the boss at Middlesbrough where he won 63 of his 136 matches in charge with 24 draws and 49 defeats.

As fans and pundits both recognise, the EFL Championship is one of the most competitive and challenging divisions for any manager to cut their teeth in and Carrick did just that.

That was after three games in interim charge of Manchester United.

Carrick’s Boro scored 220 goals and conceded 177 in that two-and-a-half year period which certainly showed how he wanted his squad to perform.

And it would be interesting to see that ambition translate with a job in the top flight if he can get it.

Mark van Bommel

The Dutchman has already been sounded out by both Celtic and Rangers this season as both Glasgow giants made an approach to discuss suitability.

Granted they weren’t handing out official job offers, but it was a signal of intent as well as a vote of confidence for his abilities to manage at that level.

Van Bommel left Royal Antwerp last year with a 53 percent win rate from his two years there in Belgium.

He won the club the Treble in 2023 and was coach of the year in that time.

Before that he worked a brief time with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga after time with PSV in his homeland.

In total, Van Bommel has managed 224 matches – including 29 with PSV’s under-19s early on – and won 126 (56.25%).
