Patrick Dorgu Dazzles in 3-4-3 Formation for Denmark — Man United Fans Excited

Ruben Amorim’s formation has been the subject of much scrutiny over the past year, with many baffled as to why he perseveres with 3-4-3 when it seemingly does not work for Manchester United.

One of the major criticisms aimed at Amorim and his beloved system is that it does not fit the players United currently have at their disposal, especially in central midfield.

However, United may have at least one player who is perfectly suited to playing in a 3-4-3 formation if Thursday night’s international action is anything to go by.

That is because left wing-back Patrick Dorgu — who was the first player to move to United as part of Amorim’s £250 million transfer spend — dazzled for Denmark in a 6-0 win over Belarus.

Dorgu started on the left of Denmark’s 3-4-3 and produced arguably his best performance of 2025. He was heavily involved from the first whistle and backed up the eye test with impressive numbers.

He recorded 75 touches and completed 41 of his 51 passes, giving him an 80% pass accuracy. The 20-year-old attempted three shots, with two on target, and made 15 touches in the opposition box. He completed two successful dribbles, won five of his nine ground duels, and was the most-fouled player on the pitch. Defensively, he was not dribbled past once.

Dorgu also scored one goal and claimed an unofficial assist for Rasmus Hojlund’s second strike of the night, with the Napoli loanee tapping home a rebound after Dorgu had powerfully struck the woodwork.

That was Denmark’s third goal of the night. Their fourth was scored by Dorgu himself following neat set-up play by Hojlund, who left Old Trafford on September 1 and will make his move to Napoli permanent next summer if they qualify for the Champions League.

One United supporter reacted by saying it was frustrating not to see that kind of link-up at club level, tweeting: “Hojlund goal, Dorgu assist. Shame we didn’t get to see this in red.”

Man United fans excited by Patrick Dorgu’s performance for Denmark

The reaction online to Dorgu’s latest international outing was overwhelmingly positive, with United supporters quick to highlight both his development and his suitability to the left wing-back role.

One fan said it was “nice to see Dorgu playing LWB for club and country,” adding that the consistency in positioning will help him improve faster.

A particularly enthusiastic supporter called him “the best left wing-back in the world”, to which another person jokingly replied: “Yes, for Denmark.”

That same fan later doubled down by writing: “Give Patrick Dorgu the chance and he won’t miss. Ruben Amorim has created one of the best left wing backs in the world alongside Nuno Mendes.”

Others were focused on his long-term potential as much as the performance itself. One wrote: “So much potential with Patrick Dorgu. Left back and left wing back becoming more and more secured for the next decade.”

Another added that once he sharpens his output in the final third, he could rival the very best, saying: “When Dorgu gets his s*** together in the final 3rd, Nuno Mendes will not chat him ngl.”

Will Patrick Dorgu start for Man United vs Liverpool?

Dorgu will get another chance to shine for Denmark in their next qualifier against Greece on Sunday before returning to England ahead of United’s trip to Anfield on October 19.

Amorim benched him for the must-win game against Sunderland, opting instead for Diogo Dalot at left wing-back, but given Dalot’s unconvincing display, there is growing expectation that Dorgu could return to the starting XI.

Performances like Thursday’s will only strengthen Dorgu’s case — and United fans sound ready to see him given a proper run.
