Five Things We Learned From Premier League Weekend as Liverpool Return to Win Column

This weekend’s Premier League calendar threw up a number of interesting results which adds to the notion that England’s top flight is never boring.

Unexpected wins, poor form arrested, momentum building points.

All were on show on matchday 10 and there were movers and shakers in the division with clubs swapping spots in the table and that is before the Monday Night Football even kicks off later this evening.

So we at FootballBlog took a closer look at the weekend’s action and picked out some interesting points which had fans tuning into Match of the Day.

Liverpool back to winning ways

Mo Salah’s stats have dropped for Liverpool this season so far but the Egyptian came to the fore on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds on a whole, in fact, have struggled for form this term and sit third in the division. Albeit they had started the matchday in seventh spot.

Arne Slot’s side had lost five of their most recent six outings and the Dutch manager knew his players had to vastly improve or risk the league leaders, Arsenal, running away from their foes.

Salah opened the scoring for his side before Ryan Gravenberch doubled their lead over Aston Villa.

It was an impressive performance in the end from Liverpool who had 16 shots at goal.

Villa have been in decent form of their own in recent months despite a poor start to their season, and Liverpool can take some pride in the fact that they beat an in-form outfit.

Erling Haaland steals the show again

Manchester City won all three points with a victory over Bournemouth to head above the Cherries in the top flight.

Andoni Iraola’s players have thus far seriously over-performed in the league so far and were always set to give City a run for their money at the Etihad either way.

It was superstar Haaland who opened the scoring with a slick finish from a good touch and his turn of pace was on show.

Tyler Adams equalised, perhaps unsurprisingly, but Haaland continued to break records with a second goal as he rounded Djordje Petrovic to finish off the first-half.

Nico O’Reilly completed the scoring after the break as the Citizens moved back to second.

Haaland was the hero of the afternoon and he took his tally for the campaign to 17 goals from 13 matches in all competitions.

Manchester United stall

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United had improved in recent weeks with three victories in a row and looked to have turned a corner following what’s been an average start.

But their desire to win a fourth was ended by Nottingham Forest who hosted what was an entertaining afternoon of action.

Sean Dyche has given Forest a boost since he arrived at the City Ground but he was left cursing the officials when a corner was given when the ball was not out of play.

Casemiro scored from the set-piece.

Morgan Gibbs-White levelled before Nicolo Savona put the hosts in front but a late stunner from Amad Diallo secured a point for the Red Devils.

It may not have been a victory for United but it keeps them eighth in the table and on the tails of the top clubs from City in second.

West Ham stun Newcastle United

Nuno Espirito Santo has been attempting to take West Ham up the table having been brought in to steady the ship following Graham Potter’s exit.

It has been a difficult start for the Portuguese but Saturday’s result – a 3-1 win over Newcastle – really set a cat amongst the Magpies.

Eddie Howe’s side have not been at their best so far this term and this latest loss was a particularly poor result.

The Hammers, meanwhile, picked up their second win of the season which was sparked by a comeback following Jacob Murphy’s early Newcastle strike.

Lucas Paqueta levelled before goals from Sven Botman into his own net and Tomas Soucek ensured the Irons grabbed the three points.

It was not a victory that took the Irons out of the relegation zone but it was one that will surely boost confidence at the London Stadium in an attempt to build the momentum for Nuno.

Fulham pile on Wolves’ agony

Wolves are in serious relegation danger having started the year without a win in the league.

Manager Vitor Pereira signed a new contract earlier in the summer but that was proven to be the wrong call from the boardroom who sacked the boss after another defeat.

It was Fulham who saw their opponents off with goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Harry Wilson and an og from Yerson Mosquera.

Marco Silva’s team moved into 14th while Wolves drifted further behind their closest rivals in the division, four behind Forest in 19th and five behind West Ham.

Things could perhaps get away from Wolves if they don’t improve dramatically, and quickly.
