Real Madrid Ready to Pounce as Bayern and Upamecano Hit Contract Sticking Point

Real Madrid are reportedly ready to capitalise if Bayern Munich cannot tie Dayot Upamecano down to a new long-term contract by January.

Upamecano’s current Bayern deal expires on 30 June 2026, and Bayern have been pushing to extend his stay.

Vincent Kompany’s side have made a lot of progress in recent weeks, and look likely to retain him. However, the deal is not 100% in the bag just yet, which has encouraged Los Blancos to keep a close eye.

Real Madrid have been left wanting a centre-back after another injury to Eder Militao. It is the third straight season the Brazilian has been sidelined with a serious injury.

Additionally, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger will also become free agents in June. According to reports, the Whites are reluctant to offer them new contracts and want to sign a younger player.

Upamecano has long been one of the top names on their wishlist. The 27-year-old centre-back is not only a technically gifted defender but is also a natural leader.

Real Madrid were outscored by Barcelona in 2025, and the hierarchy believes a player like Upamecano could help them bounce back next year.

Real Madrid Set to Pounce As Upamecano Bayern Talks Stall

According to journalist Santi Aouna, Bayern Munich and Dayot Upamecano are in agreement over the finances and the length of the new contract.

However, they have not been able to agree on activation time of the €65 million the release clause.

Bayern reportedly want the release clause to be active from the following summer. Upamecano’s camp, meanwhile, wants it active from as early as this summer.

Talks are ongoing, but neither party has yielded so far.

The longer this drags on, the better it is for Real Madrid, who are ready to offer Upamecano what he demands to finalise the deal.

Los Blancos are not the only team eyeing Upamecano for a summer transfer.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are also keen on signing him and are willing to accomodate his demands. The French side would also be able to offer him a more lucrative contract.

Bayern Hopeful of Extending Upamecano’s Contract

Bayern Munich see him as a leader in defence, and are hopeful he will commit to continue at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said:

I don’t know what the future holds. I’m very confident, as I’ve said many times. We’ve been discussing contract extensions for weeks, even months. It’s our greatest wish.

With contract talks dragging on, there have been rumours about rejections and ultimatums. Eberl dismissed them all and threw the ball in Upamecano’s court.

He added:

The rumours circulating that he refused, the threats, the ultimatums—all of that is absurd. We’re in discussions, and our talks are going very well. This obstacle is diminishing, and now he has to overcome it. I hope he overcomes it and doesn’t try to circumvent it. He’s capable of it.

French centre-back Dayot Upamecano has been a regular under Vincent Kompany this season. He has played 21 games in all competitions, scoring one goal.
