Robbie Savage caused plenty of controversy as a player and now he is doing the same as a manager after making four substitutions just one minute into a game on Tuesday night.
Former Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn, Derby and Wales midfielder Savage has been in charge of National League side Forest Green Rovers since July.
He has made an excellent start at the Gloucestershire club too, winning eight of his first 11 matches, drawing three and losing none.
Tuesday night saw Savage’s side take on Wolves U21 at the New Lawn in the National League Cup.
Forest Green — who can be backed at 6/5 with many football betting sites to win promotion this season — beat the Premier League club’s youth team 3-2 in front of 317 fans. However, the headline story was not about the result, but rather that Savage decided to sub off Neil Kengni, Abraham Kanu, Tom Knowles and Kyle McAllister inside the opening 60 seconds.
While many saw the move as shocking, Forest Green did not even mention it in the match report on their official club website, while the subs were announced on social media in a matter-of-fact way. A simple tweet read: “1′ | Early switches for Rovers”, followed by the names of the players involved.
Why did Robbie Savage make four Forest Green Rovers subs in the first minute?
This was no spur-of-the-moment tactical gamble — Savage’s quadruple switch was pre-planned.
The 50-year-old had been forced to start with four of his regular first-team players because of competition rules (more on that below). But rather than risk fatigue in a secondary competition, he subbed them off immediately for fringe and academy players.
The four substitutes who came on were Akai Bonnick, William Merrett, James Balagizi and Yahya Bamba.
It is not the first time Savage has tried this trick. In the previous round of the National League Cup against West Brom’s U21s, he withdrew two players within the opening minutes in order to rotate his squad.
The early changes also did not disrupt Forest Green’s rhythm. Goals from Jose Marquez, Isaac Moore and Harry Cardwell ensured they saw off Wolves U21s, extending their unbeaten start to the season.

What National League Cup rule was Robbie Savage trying to circumnavigate?
The new National League Cup is designed to pit senior non-league teams against Premier League academies, but it comes with strict squad requirements.
To protect the competition’s integrity, non-league clubs must name at least four players who also started their most recent league fixture.
For Forest Green, that meant Knowles, McAllister, Kengni and Kanu — all of whom had started in the previous weekend’s draw with Scunthorpe.
Savage fulfilled the letter of the law by selecting them in his XI, but he quickly replaced them with Bonnick, Merrett, Balagizi and Bamba before they had even touched the ball.
The move was within the rules, though critics argue it goes against the spirit of the competition. Interestingly, Rochdale did something similar on the same night, substituting two players in the first minute of their tie against Blackburn U21s.
What Robbie Savage said
Savage appeared to embrace the attention his unusual tactic attracted. He even retweeted a BBC Match of the Day post which read: “Just the FOUR substitutions in the opening minute” — a tongue-in-cheek reference to the bizarre moment.
When speaking to Forest Green’s in-house media after the game, Savage said: “We’re going to have a tough time picking a squad for Saturday.”
He later tweeted from his personal X (formerly Twitter) account: “Another brilliant night especially for 7 academy graduates! Well done to all, Ian and Mike and all academy staff should be proud”.
