Tottenham Hotspur eased into round four of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night by beating Doncaster Rovers 3-0 — but many fans fear that will be their last victory in the competition this season.
Spurs were 2-0 up by half-time. Joao Palhinha, starting at centre-back on a night that saw Thomas Frank rest both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, opened the scoring with a slick bicycle kick in the 14th minute.
Good work from Wilson Odebert resulted in a Jay McGrath own goal moments later.
Doncaster hit the post just before half-time courtesy of Owen Bailey, but a comeback never looked likely and Spurs wrapped up the win when Brennan Johnson scored his third goal of the season late on.
Thomas Frank “very happy” to progress to next round
Speaking to the Spurs media team after the match, manager Frank said: “I’m happy with the win, happy with the clean sheet and very happy we’re in the hat for the next round – that was the aim.
“I thought the first half was good. We started well, created chances, went 2-0 up and could have scored one or two more.
“The second half was more disjointed. We threw the ball away too easily, the pressure was not top and Doncaster did well. Always respect the opponent that made it difficult — they either dropped short or played long, but in the end, we did the job.
“We needed to make enough changes, but not too many, and try to get them in the right positions. That’s the challenge. We all know, as I say all the time, if we’re going to play 60-plus games this season, we need to be really good at nailing that — making the right amount of changes per game.”
Tough draw in Carabao Cup for Spurs
The mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was very positive after the final whistle. Many fans were excited to have caught a glimpse of star youngster Luca Williams-Barnett, who made his debut aged just 16 late in the game.
However, some of that positivity evaporated after Tottenham’s next opponents in the Carabao Cup were revealed.
Frank’s men were the eighth team out of the hat in the draw for the fourth round, which was conducted by two former Spurs midfielders in Jamie Redknapp and Michael Brown.
The seventh team drawn was Newcastle, meaning Spurs face a very tough away trip to St James’ Park.
That match — along with Arsenal vs Brighton, Grimsby Town vs Brentford, Swansea City vs Manchester City, Wrexham vs Cardiff City, Liverpool vs Crystal Palace, Wolves vs Chelsea, and Wycombe vs Fulham — will take place in the week of October 27.

Fans convinced Tottenham will lose at Newcastle… again
Many Spurs fans are not expecting to see their team still in the Carabao Cup come November.
That is because Tottenham have an awful recent record away at Newcastle. Spurs have lost each of their last three visits to St James’ Park, including a 6-1 thrashing in 2023 and a 4-1 demolition a year later.
Responding to an official club social media post about the Carabao Cup draw, one fan commented: “Can we just give them the win without playing?”
Another sarcastically added: “Excellent because we have a great record at that gaff.”
A third fan wrote: “Well, thanks for the memories @Carabao_Cup, see you next season.”
Other defeatist tweets included one that read: “Play the U21s lmao. What’s the point? Everyone else gets a nice easy round.”
Meanwhile, a similar message from another fan asked: “Why do we always get screwed over with draws?”
