Emmanuel Emegha, the Chelsea-bound Strasbourg forward, will not play again until the New Year.
The 22-year-old Netherlands international has suffered a minor thigh tear and is now expected to miss Thursday night’s Uefa Conference League game against Aberdeen as week as the visit of Icelandic side Breidablik next week.
Emegha will also be absent for the final Ligue 1 fixture before the winter break against Lorient on Sunday, and the following weekend’s Coupe de France showdown with Dunkerque of Ligue 2.
The club captain suffered the injury in training on Friday and underwent a scan on Monday to confirm the problem, according to a report in L’Equipe. He is expected to be out for roughly three weeks, with a potential return earmarked for the league trip to Nice on 3 January.
Whether Emegha will feature in that fixture remains to be seen, however, with several reports suggesting that a previously agreed deal to join Chelsea, Strasbourg’s sister club, could be moved forward to January rather than next summer, as previously anticipated. Much will hinge on how quickly Chelsea striker Liam Delap recovers from the shoulder injury he suffered at Bournemouth last weekend.
Strasbourg and Chelsea are both owned by BlueCo, the company the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium created when they acquired the Stamford Bridge club three summers ago.
Emmanuel Emegha suffers fresh setback
The injury represents a second setback in quick succession for Emegha, who was omitted from last Saturday’s league trip to Toulouse because, said Strasbourg, he “failed to respect the club’s values, expectations and rules”. It is understood the suspension was prompted by an interview Emegha gave to Dutch media after earning his first senior cap for the Netherlands in Poland last month.
Emegha, who has been the target of frustration from some Strasbourg fans after news of his move to Chelsea emerged, took the ban in good part.
‘I know I need to do better’
“I accept and understand the club’s decision to suspend me,” he wrote on social media. “I’m 22 years old, I’ve made mistakes, and I know I still have a lot to learn.
“And I have to learn from this. I know I need to do better, and I will do better, on the pitch and off it; to represent the club. That’s important to me.
“I want to make it clear that I never intended to hurt anyone. Since I arrived here at 19, I have always given everything for Strasbourg. I’m proud to play for Racing and I’m proud to wear the captain’s armband.”
The forward has scored 30 goals in 71 appearances for Strasbourg since he arrived from Sturm Graz in July 2023. Emegha will be replaced at Strasbourg by Joaquin Panichelli, who has scored 10 goals in 20 outings this season and was called up by Argentina last month.
