Brighton want Real Madrid striker Gonzalo García on loan

Football transfer rumours ranked rating: 5

It is not hard to see why there is interest in Real Madrid forward Gonzalo García.

Not every 21-year-old is capable of stepping into Kylian Mbappé boots, as García did when the feted Frenchman fell ill at this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States, and emerging from the experience with four goals, an assist and the golden boot. From his neat chipped finish against Salzburg to the thumping close-range header that did for Juventus, there were shades of fellow La Fábrica graduate Raúl in García’s performances – perhaps unsurprisingly given that the striker trained under the Madrid legend at Castilla. Here was a player capable of leading the club’s front line for years to come.

Except, it hasn’t quite worked out like that – given the wealth of attacking resources available to Madrid, it was never going to, at least not immediately – and that heady summer has since given way to bench-warming duties. Most of García’s football this season has been played for the Spain under-21 team, for whom he has scored three goals in five appearances. At club level he has started just once in La Liga, lining up alongside Mbappé against Espanyol  in September; there have been five league outings as a substitute, totalling 35 minutes, and a further two cameos in the Champions League, where he has played 12 minutes.

Manager Xabi Alonso remains a confirmed admirer of García, but there is a recognition from all within the club that the striker needs more minutes and reports in Spain suggest Real are braced for an influx of January loan inquiries. Premier League interest appears to be led by Brighton, but just how high is a striker on Fabian Hürzeler’s priority list right now?

Danny Welbeck is in flying form with six goals in 11 games, and while Georginio Rutter is yet to open his account, he has already racked up three assists, just one fewer than he managed in 33 games last season. Factor in the limited opportunities so far afforded to the Greek strikers Charalampos Kostoulas and Stefanos Tzimas, respectively signed from Olympiacos and second-tier German club Nürnberg this summer at a combined cost of more than £50m, and Brighton’s need for attacking reinforcements is not immediately obvious.

The counter-argument is that Rutter, for all his creativity, has never been a particularly prolific goalscorer, which means 34-year-old Welbeck is shouldering a disproportionate goalscoring burden following the summer departure of João Pedro to Chelsea. With Kastoulas and Tzimas in need of more playing time to adjust to English football, something they are unlikely to get immediately amid the cut and thrust of a Premier League season, could Brighton’s over-reliance on Welbeck come back to bite them later in the campaign?

A January loan move for García would undoubtedly help to mitigate that possible scenario, but much will depend on Real Madrid, who are likely to be presented with proposals from across the major European leagues. And if the Spaniard prefers to continue in all-white, a spell at Leeds, who expressed interest in his services in the summer and are crying out for a goalscorer, might make more sense.

Liverpool are in pole position to sign Antoine Semenyo in January

Football transfer rumours ranked rating: 5

The scenario is, by now, familiar. Antoine Semenyo, whose barnstorming start to the season has already brought six goals and three assists, is a wanted man. The new contract he signed with Bournemouth this summer, theoretically keeping him at Bournemouth until 2030, contains a release clause of £65m that will drop further next summer. The clamour for his signature is raging across the upper echelons of the Premier League, with Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City all linked with a move for the 25-year-old Ghana international.

The latest development in the saga centres around claims that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Semenyo, who set the tone for his eye-catching campaign with a two-goal salvo at Anfield on the opening day of the season. Semenyo wants Liverpool, Liverpool want Semenyo: so the story goes.

Yet questions remain. After spending lavishly on attacking reinforcements including Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, does Arne Slot really need another addition in an area of the pitch where he is already struggling to fit everyone in? What would Semenyo’s arrival do for the prospects of Federico Chiesa and the brilliant teenager Rio Ngumoha, both of whom are already pushing for more playing time? And why would Liverpool sign another attacking player when the more obvious need, given the erratic early-season form of Ibrahima Konaté and the devastating injury suffered by summer signing Giovanni Leoni, is for a centre-back?

Much depends on whether Slot intends to keep using Ekitike and Wirtz on the left flank, where both have been deployed occasionally already, and on whether he decides to stick or twist where Mohamed Salah is concerned. Gakpo and Salah, Slot’s existing options in those areas, have struggled to find their best form of late, and there can be little doubt that Semenyo would bring fresh dynamism and energy. The Bournemouth man’s willingness to press would also be a distinct asset for Liverpool, who have felt the loss of Luis Díaz keenly in that respect since the winger’s summer departure to Bayern Munich.

Despite those potential plusses, however, the arrival of Semenyo would only add to the challenges Slot already faces in terms of integrating new players. A fresh move for Marc Guéhi, whose anticipated move from Crystal Palace fell through at the 11th hour this summer, would make a lot more sense.
