Viktor Gyokeres Quiet in Arsenal Debut as Max Dowman Shines Again in Villarreal Defeat

It was supposed to be the first glimpse of a new era. Arsenal’s new No.14, Viktor Gyokeres, made his eagerly anticipated full debut at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night — but it was the 14 touches he had which grabbed the headlines.

The Swedish striker, signed for £63.5 million from Sporting CP, had a quiet first outing in red and white as Arsenal fell to a 3-2 defeat against Villarreal.

Nicolas Pepe, the club’s former record signing and now very much an afterthought, returned to north London to score against his former team.

But Mikel Arteta isn’t worried.

“He’s only trained five or six times with us,” the manager said post-match. “He needs rhythm, but I already saw encouraging things.”

Gyokeres Arsenal Debut Start vs Villarreal

Gyokeres showed flashes of what he can bring — sharp movement off the shoulder, physicality in tight spaces — but looked short of sharpness.

His 62-minute cameo yielded two shots: one blocked, one saved, both coming from tight angles.

There were encouraging signs, like an early burst down the left channel and a powerful dribble through two defenders in the first half.

But overall, Arsenal lacked fluency in attack — and Gyokeres didn’t quite look synced up with his new teammates yet.

His most notable moment came early in the second half, when he was slipped through on goal but fired at Villarreal’s Luiz Junior from a tough angle.

It was a near miss, but a positive sign that Gyokeres is getting into the right areas.

“He hasn’t trained properly in two months,” Arteta reiterated. “But mentally he’s ready. He wants to lead the line. He just needs time on the pitch.”

Max Dowman Shines Again – Is He Arsenal’s Next Breakout Star?

While Gyokeres may need time, 15-year-old Max Dowman continues to look like he’s already ahead of schedule.

Dowman came off the bench once again and caused chaos. Just like in the friendly against Newcastle, Dowman ran fearlessly at defenders and won a penalty that was converted by Martin Odegaard to bring Arsenal back into the match.

Despite playing just 30 minutes, Dowman attempted four times as many dribbles as Bukayo Saka did in the entire match.

“He continues to impress,” Arteta said. “What he does in matches, he’s already been doing in training. He’s efficient, direct, and fearless. He deserves these minutes.”

Dowman, who was already training with the first team as a 14-year-old, now has Premier League clearance to feature domestically.

But don’t expect to see him at Old Trafford next week. The teenager is set for a short break before rejoining training.

Arsenal Defensive Issues Persist

While much of the focus was on Gyokeres and Dowman, the 3-2 defeat exposed some slightly worrying familiar patterns at the back that we’ve seen in pre-season.

Nicolas Pepe opened the scoring after a defensive mix-up. Arnaut Danjuma and Karl Etta Eyong also capitalised on sloppy defending and rebounds.

Jakub Kiwior was outmuscled, Kepa Arrizabalaga was beaten far too easily, and Arsenal once again looked vulnerable defending transitions.

Arteta admitted the result “hurt,” adding: “We were naïve, especially in open spaces.”

With just over a week to go before the season opener against Manchester United, there’s work to be done for Arsenal.
