Fintan Bradley Opinion Piece: Week 1

As the Uefa Super Cup clash between Chelsea and Athletico Madrid draws close I am looking into the less obvious positives Chelsea can take from their Champions League success.

In his first 3 Premier League games Eden Hazard has lit up Chelsea’s attack with his pace, skill and vision, but had Chelsea not won the Champions League last season it would have been a whole different scenario for the blues with Hazard not signing as his heart was set on playing for a club in the prestigious European competition. Last term Chelsea came a disastrous 6th in the Premier League meaning if they were to qualify for the Champions League this season they would have to win the trophy against Bayern Munich. The SW6 club did so and took England’s 4th qualifying spot at the expense of Tottenham. Throughout the summer Roman Abramovich has been armed with his holy grail and check book. He has been able to recruite world class talent and revamp the chelsea squad as they finally move out of Jose Mourinho’s shadow, and all of that because of the Champions League win… but there’s more.

Roman Abramovich’s reign as the owner of Chelsea has seen 8 managers come and go, but maybe now Abramovich has the Champions League under his belt he can be a little more lenient and give time to future managers and let their reign progress. This hint of managerial stability could put the Chelsea job back on the map and maybe intice other managers.

It is clear that Chelsea have future world class talent in their youth system, but in recent years Abramovich has chosen to buy rather to let the youth progress. Maybe this is the managers fault, but if they are granted time and managerial stability they could let the youth progress and save the club money. This possible advantage to the blues also requests that Abramovich shows patience in order for it to work.

So being the holders of the Champions League is a great power to have and if the Managers and Roman Abramovich use it correctly Chelsea could be winning it again and again…
