OUT – Ramos, Comoli, Poyet IN – Redknapp

I, like every other Spurs fan, has woken up to the news that chairman Daniel Levy has sacked Juande Ramos; along with his assistant, Gus Poyet, and director of football, Damien Comoli. The decision was made official at about 11:00 last night, just 16 hours before the huge match against Bolton, following Levy’s trend to sack managers less than 3 months into the new campaign. An hour later, Portsmouth boss, Harry Redknapp, was named as the new boss at White Hart Lane.

All axed.

The pressure was heapibng upon Ramos, with reports that he had lost the dressing room, and leading Spurs to their worst ever league start. I am amongst, probably the minority, of Spurs fans that feel Ramos could have been given a bit more time, as the summer aquisitions were not in his power, but instead that of Damien Comoli. This is evident, as he left David Bentley out of the squad completely for Thursday night’s loss in Italy, and clearly wanted to bring in a top class striker, shown by Fraizer Campbell’s lack of first team action. So, Daniel Levy felt he had to wash his hands of the director of football aswell, and indeed the director of football role all together. Otherwise, I suppose, Harry would have been a lot more reluctant to take the job. But, this move does come at a price. The sacking of two-time Uefa Cup champion, Juande Ramos, has cost the club £15m, whilst the aquisition of Redknappcost £5m.

On taking over, Harry said “It was a great opportunity for me, Tottenham are a great club – but I honestly loved, genuinely loved my time at Portsmouth I have never been happier – but Tottenham have come in and £5million is great for Portsmouth and I will now see what I can do at Tottenham.” Whilst Clive Allen and Alex Inglethorpe are taking charge for today’s match against Bolton, Redknapp revealed that he will speak to the players before the match, and at half time.

What does this mean for January?

If Redknapp does not have a huge impact straight away at Spurs, some big name players may demand an exit from the club: players such as Giovani who came to London based mainly on Juande Ramos’s pedigree. But after the abolishment of the sporting director role, Harry will most likely be left on his own to make the signings he wants to make. He also aknowledged that Tottenham have a good squad, but an unbalanced squad, and accepted that there were some problem areas. One of which is defensive midfield, which could lead to Lasana Diarra being re-united with his old boss; a move that seemed more than likely in the summer, when Ramos was still at the helm.
