Speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is increasing again as we approach the summer and the re-opening of the transfer market. Guess what! Real Madrid are once again projected as the favourites to sign the Portuguese sensation from Manchester United. If reports are to be believed, then the Real Madrid board are either deaf or plain stupid to persist with their intentions of luring Ronaldo away from the Red Devils. Ferguson said he doesn’t want to sell, the board won’t accept any fee for their prized wonderkid, Man Utd are on course for the Champions League (something that despite Real Madrid’s history they are NOT), and everyone is telling Ronaldo that he can be the world’s best player ONLY at Manchester United.

What did David Beckham achieve by going to Real Madrid? In football terms, Madrid did not make him a better player, but rather worse than he played at Man Utd. What did Van Nistelrooy achieve? Well, he scores goals, but he has to compete with a bigger number of strikers at Madrid for a regular first-team slot. Madrid are a buying club, throwing away hundreds of millions on star players, merely for merchandising income. It has been a while since they truly challenged for the UEFA Champions League.

It has been reported today that Real Madrid are willing to pay £80 million for Ronaldo, higher than last summer’s reported £70 million. But, the good news is, that Man Utd do not need to accept this bid! And it seems that Cristiano is happy where he is, after Ferguson convinced him that his future lies in England. My suggestion to Cristiano would be to stay at Manchester United, even for life, as they are the only club that can make him a better player. If he stays, Ronaldo will be mentioned in the same sentence as football legends George Best, Eric Cantona, Pele and Maradona, amongst others. On the other hand, if he is more interested in fame and money than football, he can go to Real Madrid, and learn to sit on the sidelines! Then we can say that a World-class Player threw away his football career for financial reasons, which would be a pity, considering his immense talent.
