Today, the Sun reported that Manchester United will start discussions with Wigan Athletic next week for the transfer of the player from Honduras, Wilson Palacios. The 23-year old midfielder started his career at Honduran club Olimpia in 2002. He went for a trial at Arsenal in August 2007, and then being snapped up by Birmingham on a six-month loan. Then-manager Steve Bruce compared the player to the famous Paul Ince. After having his brother kidnapped, Palacios was absent from Birmingham for some time. During this time, Alex McLeish was appointed manager to replace Bruce, while the latter joined Wigan as manager.
When Palacios returned from absence, his loan period was expiring and McLeish decided not to make the transfer permanent in the January 2008 transfer window. Palacios joined former manager Steve Bruce’s new club, Wigan Athletic. He was an important player to keep Wigan in the Premier League for another season and has received a lot of praise from his teammates. Michael Brown said about him:
“He has got a lot of talent, two good feet, he can head, tackle and he likes getting forward.”
A club insider at Wigan was reported as saying:
“There has been contact between the clubs and Wigan have told United Palacios would cost £8m. Steve Bruce wants to keep him but it’s difficult to stand in the player’s way when United come calling.”
Man Utd seem to be ready to meet the team’s valuation of £8 million for the player, who would join the amazing midfield department at the Red Devils. Ferguson will have a closer look at the player when the two teams meet each other at the JJB Stadium on the last matchday of the 2007/08 Campaign.
