Luis Suarez Apologises Over Spitting Incident; Inter Miami Star’s Rap Sheet After Years of Bad Behaviour

Luis Suarez simply cannot avoid creating controversy and last weekend was no different for the striker.

The Uruguayan international was blasted for what was the latest in a long line of yob behaviour after he was clocked on camera spitting at an opposing coach.

Suarez, 38, appeared to spit on a Seattle Sounders coach in the dugout following his Inter Miami side’s 3-0 defeat to their foes in the Leagues Cup Final. It was a disgusting moment to watch but perhaps fans were left unsurprised given the player’s history.

During the action the former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid frontman was seen chasing an opponent while teammate Sergio Busquets appeared to throw a punch.

And that is when things descended further into chaos with Suarez.

The attacker has now taken to social media to apologise for his actions and congratulate Sounders for their victory. And he has asked for forgiveness for a moment he claims does not represent his club or his family.

Luis Suarez apologises over Seattle Sounders spitting incident

“First, I want to congratulate the Seattle Sounders for their Leagues Cup triumph,” he wrote via Instagram. “But most of all, I want to apologize for my behavior when the game ended. “It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things haped that shouldn’t have happened but that doesn’t justify my reaction.

“I made a mistake and sincerely apologize. It’s not the image I want to give in front of my family, that suffers because of my mistakes, in front of my club, that also doesn’t deserve seeing themselves affected by something like this.

“I feel bad for what happened, and I didn’t want to let pass the opportunity to recognize and apologize to everything that felt bad for what I did. We know there is still a lot of season left ahead and we will work together to try and get the triumphs that this club and its fans deserve. A hug to all.”

The incident is certainly not the first time Suarez has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. He dived in front of David Moyes during a Merseyside derby clash, to name just one.

Here we take a look at the player’s rap sheet over the years and the moments of madness mixed throughout what has been an exceptional playing career.

Handball vs Ghana

In the World Cup quarter-final, the striker deliberately punches the ball off his own goal line to prevent his side being beaten late on. He is rightfully sent off but watches his teammate save Asamoah Gyan’s penalty and celebrates wildly. Refused to apologise in the aftermath.

Racially abusing Patrice Evra

Back in 2011, Suarez was accused of racially abusing the-then Manchester United defender during a game. He was found guilty after admitting the abuse and was banned for eight matches.

Incredibly, Liverpool players wore a shirt supporting the striker before ultimately opting against an appeal.

Refuses Evra handshake

Months after the racism, the two clubs squared off at Old Trafford. Before kick-off both teams lined up for handshakes and Suarez refused the Frenchman’s hand.

He was later accused of misleading Liverpool over yet another incident and was branded a “disgrace” by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bites Branislav Ivanovic

Suarez scored for the Reds as they drew 2-2 with Chelsea but the game and his goal were marred by a ridiculous incident where the forward took a chunk out of his opponent’s arm.

The officials did not see the bite at the time but he was subsequently hit with a 10 match ban. Shamefully, Suarez complained about the ban length.

Bites Giorgio Chiellini

A leopard never changes his spots, eh? Suarez was again wrapped up in another disgusting biting incident, this time with Italy icon Giorgio Chiellini.

He sunk his teeth into the big defender’s shoulder and he was fined £66,000 and banned for four months, equating to nine games.
