Newcastle United were linked with numerous strikers while the summer transfer window was open – but now one has denied the speculation.
The Magpies sold Alexander Isak following a summer-long saga which had the Swedish frontman complaining and demanding he be allowed to leave.
Isak issued a statement accusing the club of breaking promises over an exit but his £125million switch was eventually sanctioned by the beleaguered board.
The gaping hole 62-goal Isak left, however, had to be filled by the club and Eddie Howe’s side had been linked with numerous attacking options over the course of the last few months.
Benjamin Sesko went to Manchester United despite Newcastle’s interest and Hugo Ekitike joined Liverpool despite their Premier League rivals hoping to land the Frenchman.
Alexander Sorloth denies Newcastle transfer interest
Eventually Newcastle would sign Nick Woltemade from VFB Stuttgart as well as Yoane Wissa who forced his exit from Brentford to make the deal happen at St James’s Park.
But one player who was linked with a move to England has now rejected the rumours and denied any interest in leaving his current club.
Atletico Madrid frontman Alexander Sorloth was believed to be on the radar but he has confirmed that speculation was “not true” as he insisted he only ever planned to remain in La Liga.
“It came as a big surprise to me,” Sorloth told NRK. “That’s what you have to live with as a footballer at this level.
“Things are written that are not true and that I have not said. I take that with crushing calm.”
Of course, the summer window is now closed having come to an end last week, Monday, at 7pm.
Newcastle linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta
But the January window is now only a few short months away from kicking the whole madness off again.
And Newcastle have already seen their first line of speculation arrive in the form of yet another forward who has been linked to the club for the next available window.
Crystal Palace have already sold Ebere Eze who was a massive star for the Eagles. Had the club not changed their mind late on deadline day, Marc Guehi would also already be away to Liverpool.
But it is striker Jean-Philippe Mateta who is the latest big name to be part of the rumour mill with Newcastle the supposed buying club again.
Caught Offside reports that the club have now listed Mateta as their top priority target for the next window but they would face serious competition from the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds United who have reportedly done the same.
