Arsenal left it late yesterday evening to stun Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The Magpies had led since the first-half of the action at St James’ Park when big centre forward Nick Woltemade headed home the opener after 34 minutes.
Mikel Arteta’s visitors huffed and puffed for large parts of the match but did produce plenty of good opportunities from which to score.
Unfortunately for the Gunners they would miss a number of them before the final five or so minutes when Mikel Merino would find the back of the net with a header of his own.
Just when the closely contested fixture looked to be securing a point for each team, “world’s best” defender Gabriel popped up inside the sixth minute of stoppage time and flicked home a corner to give his side the victory.
The excellent Nick Pope flapped at the set-piece to watch the ball nestle into his net and that sent the visiting players and supporters into raptures as they took a massive three points from a difficult venue.
Arsenal vs Newcastle United result gives Gunners fresh momentum
Arsenal had 20 efforts on goal throughout the 90 minutes with seven of them testing goalie Pope who had performed admirably.
But with the points sealed late on, the win allowed fans to dream of what might still be this season with Arteta’s lads finally finding the killer instinct where it has been lacking in the past.
Last season Arsenal may very well have drawn the game.
The campaign before last, the Gunners might have lost it.

So what was different this term?
Arsenal have grown a reputation in recent years for being always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
The past three years on the spin has witnessed the North London club finishing their Premier League campaign in second spot behind Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.
Premier League table shows Arsenal pushing leaders Liverpool
However, it is possible that the players’ mindset this season has changed and Arteta may finally have found a recipe for success as the Spaniard is fed up of finishing as a runner-up.
There is still plenty of this season to go before any winners – and losers – are named.
But should the Gunners lift the trophy in May 2026, fans and their staff will surely look back on September 28, 2025 as one of the most significant results of their year.
This weekend had another potentially important result for Arsenal where the race for silverware is concerned.
Liverpool were beaten by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah – the ex-Arsenal striker.
Federico Chiesa had scored for the Reds while Liverpool target Marc Guehi played the full 90 for Palace.
