Why Marc Guehi Should Not Give Up Crystal Palace Captaincy Despite Failed Liverpool Move

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi is said to be so furious at his failed Liverpool transfer that he is considering giving up the Crystal Palace captain’s armband this season.

The Palace central defender was poised to finally make his dream switch to Anfield to join the Reds after what has been a bit of a long-running saga this summer.

Guehi, 25, was on the brink of a £35million move but at the eleventh hour the deal collapsed as chairman Steve Parish had a late – very late – change of heart.

Guehi had already completed the first part of his medical and a deal sheet was prepared to allow both clubs to work on the finer details after the deadline. But it was claimed that manager Oliver Glasner threatened to walk if it went through, and that cost the England international his dream transfer.

Marc Guehi furious over failed Liverpool transfer

The latest reports from multiple outlets claim that the centre-half was left devastated over his stay at Selhurst Park as he thought he had finally agreed to head to Merseyside.

And after refusing to force a move in the same way Alexander Isak forced his move to Liverpool, he was left disappointed.

That has now brought on suggestions that Guehi could potentially opt to give up the captain’s armband at the club in protest against the board for reneging on the deal.

It is believed a farewell video had already been put together for the player which ended with the words “thank you Skip”. According to the Guardian, a private jet was also teed up to take him to his new club before it was ditched.

A source has seemingly told the same publication that Guehi is now reconsidering his decision to remain as skipper of the Eagles, but it remains to be seen whether or not that will be the case.

Guehi has been professional for Palace throughout the summer transfer window and acted with respect towards both clubs.

And that is why the 23-time capped England international should think again before chucking away the armband this season.

Why Guehi should keep hold of Crystal Palace captaincy

The aforementioned Isak, for example, has been accused of bad behaviour and forcing his way to Anfield despite being under contract at Newcastle United.

The Swedish striker has ruined his Newcastle legacy with his acts after he refused to play again for Eddie Howe’s side as he demanded to make an exit.

Isak would eventually get his £125m move but his reputation is in tatters.

Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa also sought a move to the Magpies from Brentford and he went public with complaints over the Bees’ refusal to let him leave amid “broken promises”.

Guehi can have his cake and eat it, too, if he waits it out until January.

Keep the responsibility and respect of the captaincy before signing a pre-contract at Liverpool or, alternatively, earn Palace a few quid to avoid leaving on a free.
