Darren Fletcher is the new interim boss of Manchester United, having been put in charge following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.
Fletcher has never previously taken charge of a senior first-team game, but that will change on Wednesday night when he leads United against Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
United briefly mentioned Fletcher towards the end of a 106-word statement confirming Amorim’s departure. It read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Darren Fletcher’s coaching career to date
Fletcher played 342 games for United between 2003 and 2015, before returning to the club in a coaching role in 2020.
His first job in coaching came with United’s Under-16s, before he was promoted to first-team coach under Erik ten Hag in January 2021. He then spent three years as the club’s technical director between March 2021 and April 2024.
Fletcher’s most recent role has been as head coach of United’s Under-18s, who are currently second in the U18 Premier League, behind Manchester City.
Will Darren Fletcher pick his twin sons against Burnley?
For at least one game, Fletcher will now be in charge of his 18-year-old twin sons at Manchester United.
Midfielder Jack Fletcher has already made three Premier League appearances this season, having been handed his debut by Amorim.
His twin brother Tyler Fletcher has yet to feature for the first team, but social media has been full of speculation that this could change with their father now in interim charge.
While there is no suggestion Fletcher will show favouritism, it is possible that one or both of the twins could feature against Burnley. Both were named on the bench for Amorim’s final game — a 1-1 draw away at Leeds on Sunday.
Could Darren Fletcher keep the Man United job?
United are expected to explore other candidates as they search for Amorim’s permanent replacement.
Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea on New Year’s Day, is said to be one possible option, while Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is also admired by decision-makers at Old Trafford.
Maresca’s record as Chelsea manager included a 59.78% win percentage — significantly higher than Amorim’s 38.10% at United.
However, Fletcher is well respected internally and it is believed he could yet emerge as a realistic candidate if he impresses during his interim spell.
Another possible scenario is that United could extend Fletcher’s temporary stint until the end of the season if their preferred long-term option is not immediately available.
