Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri has accepted a loan move to Marseille.
Nothing has been finalised yet, but talks are progressing between the two clubs as all parties look to secure the midfielder more regular football for the second half of the season.
Any agreement would be a straight loan until the end of the campaign, with no option to buy, and would include a loan fee based on appearances.
Ethan Nwaneri loan to Marseille latest
Arsenal are open to Nwaneri leaving on loan, provided the move prioritises his development and guarantees meaningful minutes.
Marseille have emerged as strong contenders after head coach Roberto De Zerbi held positive conversations with both Mikel Arteta and the player.
De Zerbi’s reputation for working with technical midfielders, combined with Marseille’s willingness to offer Nwaneri a clear role, has made the Ligue 1 side an attractive option.
There is also interest from Premier League clubs and elsewhere in Europe, but some of those approaches included permanent moves that Arsenal immediately rejected.
A decision from Nwaneri is expected soon, with the player keen to play more regularly during a crucial stage of his development.
Why isn’t Nwaneri playing for Arsenal?
It is easy to forget just how young Nwaneri still is. He made history in September 2022 when he debuted against Brentford aged 15 years and 181 days, becoming the youngest player in Premier League history.
Last season felt like a breakthrough. Nwaneri made 37 appearances across all competitions, including 26 in the league, starting 11 times and scoring nine goals.
Injuries to Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard opened the door, allowing him to feature both on the right wing and in midfield. He delivered several standout moments, including goals against Manchester City, Girona and PSV.
This season has been very different. With Saka and Odegaard largely fit, and the arrivals of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke in the summer, opportunities have dried up.
Nwaneri has played just 515 minutes across 12 appearances, has not started a league game in 2025–26, and has not featured in the Premier League since November 23.
For an 18-year-old in a title-chasing squad with significant depth, that drop-off is not unusual.
Why Marseille appeal to Arsenal and Nwaneri
From Arsenal’s perspective, the key factor is game time.
Nwaneri is highly rated internally and tied down to a long-term contract signed last August, but development at this stage requires consistent senior football.
Marseille can offer that. De Zerbi’s style is all about positional fluidity, ball progression and risk-taking in midfield areas, all qualities that suit Nwaneri’s profile.
Arsenal also trust the environment and the coaching, which is why Marseille have edged ahead of other interested clubs.
Bournemouth wanted Nwaneri following Antoine Semenyo’s exit to Manchester City, but those talks have cooled since, with the club moving onto other targets.
Arsenal are comfortable with their current squad depth and believe Nwaneri returning sharper and more experienced would benefit them in the long run.
Will Nwaneri leave Arsenal permanently?
A loan move doesn’t change Arsenal’s long-term view of Nwaneri. If anything, it reinforces it.
The teenager has been used more centrally this season, but he currently sits behind Odegaard, Eze, and Mikel Merino in the pecking order for that right-sided 10 position.
That congestion has limited his chances rather than any loss of faith from Arteta, even though Arsenal have an open-play creativity problem.
A loan until the end of the season would give Nwaneri, who turns 19 in March, the chance to play regularly, learn from different tactical demands and return better equipped to challenge for minutes at Arsenal.
From the club’s perspective, it is a low-risk move with significant upside.
Arsenal transfer plans and possible exits
Aside from Nwaneri, Arsenal are not actively pushing to move players on in this window.
The squad is in a strong place following last summer’s recruitment, and there is no urgency to reshape it mid-season.
There is some background movement, with Oleksandr Zinchenko’s representatives exploring options after his loan spell at Nottingham Forest stalled, but no major departures are planned.
The Gunners are already looking ahead to the summer, with Real Madrid teenager Victor Valdepenas among the defenders being monitored.
A left-winger could also be targeted, with Anthony Gordon back on Arsenal’s radar.
For now, though, the focus remains on managing the squad smartly and ensuring young players like Nwaneri continue to progress, even if that means doing so away from north London for a few months.
