Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin joins exclusive list of goal-scoring keepers after Champions League heroics

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin incredibly scored a header with the last kick of the game to send his side into the round of 32,  in a dramatic end to the Champions League group phase.

Despite being 3-2 up against Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho’s men needed another to leapfrog Marseille and put Benfica into the knockout phases.

After sending goalkeeper Trubin up for a last-minute free-kick against nine-man Madrid, Mourinho saw his risk rewarded with an incredible header from the 24-year-old.

In doing so, the Ukrainian joins an exclusive list of goalkeepers to have found the net in the Champions League – though none of them were quite as dramatic as Turbin’s last-minute goal for Benfica.

The four other goalkeepers to have scored in the Champions League

1) Hans-Jorg Butt

German keeper Hans-Jorg Butt became the first goalkeeper to score in the Champions League after scoring for Hamburg in September 2000.

Remarkably, Butt finished his career with three Champions League goals to his name – although all three were penalties.

The 51-year-old was the designated spot-kicker for Hamburg, Bayern Leverkusen and Bayern Munich during a 15-year career between the sticks.

Even more remarkable is the fact that all three of his goals came against Juventus, with the German scoring one for each club against the Italian side.

The last of those goals came in December 2009 during a 4-1 rout for the Bavarians.

2) Sinan Bolat

On the same day that Butt scored his last Champions League penalty against Juventus, Standard Liege goalkeeper Sinan Bolat went and upstaged the veteran goalkeeper.

With the Belgian losing at home to AZ Alkmaar, the Turkish international was sent forward for a free kick in the 95th minute for one last throw of the dice.

Bolat headed home to clinch 3rd place in the group for Liege, and with it, Europa League football.

In other words, Bolat walked so that Trubin could run.

3) Vincent Enyeama

Another man on the list who benefited from taking spot-kicks, Vincent Enyeama’s penalty against Lyon in September 2010 saw the Nigerian become the third goalkeeper to score in the Champions League.

Enyeama’s goal pulled one back for Hapoel Tel Aviv F.C, until the French side ran out 3-1 winners in Israel.

4) Ivan Provedel

After being blessed with three goals from goalkeepers in two consecutive Champions League seasons, it took 13 years for another man between the sticks to score in the competition.

Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s 95th-minute goal secured the Italians a crucial point for the Italians in their Champions League group stage match against Atletico Madrid.

Unlike other goals on the list, Provedel’s winner came from a last-gasp corner, with Luis Alberto’s whipped cross from the second ball being met brilliantly by the 6ft 4in keeper.

Lazio also went on to qualify for the knockout rounds, and for matchday one, this was as exciting as it gets.
