Why Arsenal’s Head to Head Record vs Chelsea Bodes Well for Table Topping Clash

Arsenal are flying in the Premier League this season and have a chance on Sunday to extend their gap at the top with a win over Chelsea.

The Blues are their opponents’ closest title rivals at this moment in time as they sit second in the division with six points separating both clubs. All credit, though, has to go to the Gunners for their early season form which has shown every other foe up as they have only lost one match – away to Liverpool – early on.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are on for the Quadruple right now as the Spaniard has guided them to the summit in the top flight while they are also dominating the Champions League and sit atop the league phase table, too. They are on course to compete for the Carabao Cup having made it to the quarter-finals and the FA Cup is another prize they will certainly have on their agenda.

In the Premier League specifically, though, the North London outfit have been near unstoppable. Arsenal’s clean sheet run was exceptional and only ended in a draw with Sunderland who themselves have been a surprise package so far.

They sit six clear of Chelsea with nine wins and two draws from their 12 matches so far. Their attacking players have done their jobs so far with 24 goals scored – joint most in the league alongside Manchester City – while they have kept the door shut at the other end with just six conceded, the least of anyone by a decent margin.

The time for Arsenal could really be now and if they can get the better of Enzo Maresca’s lads on Sunday, that would go a long way towards establishing the club as genuine favourites to lift the trophy next May. And, according to recent history, their chances of picking up three points are not half bad.

Arsenal vs Chelsea head to head record

It is safe to say that Arsenal have Chelsea’s number right now. According to the crunched numbers, the Gunners are in the midst of a strong run of form against this weekend’s rivals.

From the last seven clashes between the two London clubs, Arsenal have won five and drawn two. Their unbeaten recent run has come with 17 goals scored and six conceded in the same timeframe.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca

The run stretches back to August 2021 when Chelsea won 2-0 at the Emirates. Romelu Lukaku and Reece James were the scorers that day four years ago and Maresca will need a repeat of that afternoon to avoid the dreadful run continuing.

Chelsea’s form

It can’t quite be considered a shock that Chelsea have found themselves second in the league considering they spent almost £300million in the summer. However, clubs around them also spent big and don’t have the same form to boast.

Their early season form was not particularly great and they certainly did not have the best of starts with a goalless draw with Crystal Palace on the opening day. They followed that up with two wins (5-1 vs West Ham, 2-0 vs Fulham), but they then dropped points in two consecutive games including a 2-2 draw with Brentford and a loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

They were then surprisingly beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Stamford Bridge but that result and performance seemed to turn the tide for Maresca. His side improved to defeat Liverpool and then Nottingham Forest before Sunderland silenced them on their own patch.

Since then they are unbeaten in six in both Premier League and Champions League and have picked up maximum points (nine) from their three league games.

Considering their run, now might be the best time to be coming up against Arsenal, but nothing will be handed to them.

What Arteta and Maresca have said before Arsenal vs Chelsea

Spanish coach Arteta believes Chelsea fully deserve to be in the title race. And asked if he stands by his comments from last season – when he described the Blues as “the best attacking team in the league by a mile” – he responded.

“They were [the best last season], the sample now this season is early so it’s difficult to say,” the boss said.

“But it is one of the teams that I enjoy the most watching and they have a lot of fluidity, they have a lot of threat, they have a lot of individual talent, they are very clear what they want to do and that’s why they are very tough.”

Maresca, meanwhile, said on the game: “It’s another big game.

“We finished the Barcelona one and we won, it’s a good feeling. If it’s bigger than the last one, I don’t know. For me, they are all important games. For sure, beating Barcelona and if we are able to beat Arsenal, it’s a nice feeling, it’s three points.”
