Arsenal have had a stand out season so far, sitting in 1st place and getting all the required points to just stay ahead of the chasing pack. Yet a lot of pundits seem to be tipping the likes of Chelsea and Man City to be champions this season?
This year has been a stand out season all round, neither clear relegation or Champion favourite. I can see why the steer is towards Man City, their goal to game ratio is in the realms of Barcelona and there fluid football is just showing how much a change to the right manager can make.
For Arsenal to take the league this year need to re-enforce in one or maybe two strikers. There is too much heavy reliance on Olivier Giroud and the back up strikers in Nicklas Bendtner, Yaya Sanago and Park Chu-Young do not have either the experience or talent to carry the Gunners to the top spot. So how can Mr Wenger tilt the scales in his favour?
Karim Benzema is supposed to be one of the best strikers on the scene at the moment but for me he has not set the world alight. He has not really proven himself to be a world class striker in the same vain as Messi, Ronaldo etc. The temptation here is a deadly strike force combination with Giroud backed by ex Real Madrid play maker Ozil. The final off-putting aspect of Benzema is the price tag he may carry.
Wayne Rooney was on Arsenal’s radar at one point and with recent news speculation that he will not re-sign with United, he may very well be an option. He would bring strength and more depth to the Arsenal team. He is both a playmaker and goal scorer and dropping behind Giroud would be devastating. The problem with this one is that I doubt Man Utd will let him go in this transfer window and with Real Madrid beckoning in summer, would he want to go now?
Dimitar Berbatov is another name that has been around the houses for Arsenal to sign. He is clearly unhappy at Fulham and is probably looking for that last big payday before he sees out his career somewhere like the states. Motivation seems to be always an issue that crops up but he may excel under a top club spotlight. Bringing in Berbatov may have a negative effect on a team that is riding high at the moment, so he may not be a good idea
Alvaro Morata seems a very good fit for the Gunners. The 21 year old Spanish forward is an emerging talent which could hit world class status if under Wenger’s wing. He is already second in the pecking order of strikers at Real Madrid and with a promise of more games might be tempted to come to Arsenal in a loan move. This would also give Wenger a try before you buy option.
Other strikers have been mentioned in the press including Mandzukic, Rodrigo, Vucinic, Draxler and a laughable rumour of the return of Van-Persie means that they have a lot of options to consider. I tip Arsenal for top of the table if they can secure another striker of quality. If not then the light blue tank of Man City will keep rumbling forward.
