Atletico Madrid need a commanding victory in their final Champions League league-phase outing to have a shot at securing a place in the Round of 16.
Los Rojiblancos sit in 12th place in the Champions League table with 13 points after seven matches. Diego Simeone’s men host Bodo/Glimt at the Metropolitano Stadium in their last league match, but it unlikely to be a straightforward affair.
Bodo/Glimt secured a historic victory over Manchester City in their previous UCL outing. Erling Haaland hit his worst scoring run in years as the Norwegian club beat the English heavyweights 3-1.
An Intense Battle for a Champions League Top 8 Spot
The Champions League Top 8 battle is shaping up to be a lot more intense than last season. Eight teams are tied on 13 points, with only goal difference separating them.
Reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain are in sixth place with 13 points and a +10 goal difference. They trail Arsenal (21 points), Bayern Munich (18), Real Madrid (15), Liverpool (15), and Tottenham Hotspur (14). Newcastle United also have a goal difference of +10, but they have scored fewer goals than Les Parisiens.
Chelsea and Barcelona occupy the next two spots with goal differences of +6 and +5, respectively. Sporting CP (+5) and Manchester City (+4) are ahead of Atletico Madrid (+3), with Atlanta (+1) also in the picture.
Atletico need to be in the top eight by the end of Wednesday to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Finishing anywhere between ninth and 24th would condemn them to the play-offs in February. Last season, Atletico secured 18 points in the league phase of the competition. They finished fifth and directly qualified for the Last 16.

How Atletico Madrid Can Qualify for Champions League Round of 16
Victory is the bare minimum for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night. They also need to win by a healthy margin to have a shot at beating their peers to a Top 8 spot.
Manchester City are their closest challengers, with a +4 goal difference. So, they have to win and outscore the Cityzens by at least one goal to take their place.
Atletico have scored more goals than City this season, which gives them an advantage in the second tie-breaker.

Overcoming Sporting CP and or Barcelona’s goal differences, on the other hand, is a tall order. The Blaugrana have also scored more goals than Atletico this season, and face FC Copenhagen at Camp Nou in their final outing.
Outside Help Could Save Atletico
Diego Simeone insists his team will solely focus on winning their match on Wednesday night. However, as things stand, a win alone will not be enough to secure a place in the Top 8.
With all 18 matches kicking off at the same time, Atletico Madrid must also monitor other key games to determine their fate in the Champions League Round of 16.
The most important one is the battle between PSG and Newcastle United at the Parc des Princes.
Since 2011, Real Madrid and Barcelona have gone through a combined 17 managers.

If the game ends in a draw and Atletico win, they would leapfrog both teams in the table. A win for either PSG or Newcastle would also be beneficial for Simeone and Co.
Chelsea visit Napoli in their last outing. Since the Italian giants are sitting just outside of a play-off spot, they need an encouraging result over the Blues to give themselves a chance.
Sporting face Athletic Club, and Man City host Galatasaray in two difficult-to-call matches. With a bit of luck, Atletico could secure a Top 8 spot by the end of the day.
