Bristol City 2-0 Coventry City

Bristol City gave their play-off hopes a timely boost tonight, defeating Coventry City by two goals to nil.

After losses to Birmingham and Derby last week, the Robins’ chances seemed to be fading, but fans will hope that this result reignites their challenge.

In the first half, Bristol City created a number of chances. However, a number of tame shots, such as Gavin Williams’ effort, went straight into the hands of Kieren Westwood, the Coventry ‘keeper.

Stern John created another notable chance, breaking through only to be denied by Westwood clambering at the on-loan striker’s feet, the ball eventually being cleared by a Coventry defender.

John was also responsible for the best attempt of the first half, looping a header over the flailing Westwood, only to see it cleared off the line by Marcus Hall.

Coventry had a couple of decent chances themselves, with Irish international Clinton Morrison hitting the post, while Chris Coleman’s side also had a goal disallowed for offside.

However, City dominated the second half of the game, and made their possession count when Jamie McCallister drilled in a great shot from well outside the area, 6 minutes past the hour mark.

Coventry never recovered, with City continuing to pose a threat. The three points were sealed by midfielder Lee Johnson, with a tap-in with 10 minutes to go.

Gary Johnson’s side are up to seventh, level on points with sixth-placed Swansea, who have a game in hand on their rivals from across the Severn.
