Capello’s Dilemma

With all the fuss about England’s opening performance beginning to die down ahead of Fridays game against Algeria, England manager Fabio Capello finds himself in a difficult situation with regards to team selection.

 To be fair he has brought a lot of this on himself. He took Ledley King knowing his injury problems, and played James Milner when he clearly wasn’t well enough. Add to this Robert Green’s error against the USA and it seems a difficult time for the England manager.

However lets not get too down about it, it was only the first game of the tournament and England are renown for being slow starters. Apart from Germany’s opening performance there hasn’t been a stand out display from any of the favourites so far. Spain losing their first match begins to put England’s performance into a far greater perspective although it is still early day for everyone.

Capello isn’t a bad manager, he has won titles in his native Italy and also for Real Madrid in Spain as well, also lets not forget the way England qualified as well, unbeaten until the last game. The group is still very much in England’s hands and a good win on Friday will put us back in pole position to qualify from a group that we all thought we would win.

So on to Friday andn with a few changes we should be ablke to beat Algeria comfortably. So my starting eleven would be as follows;

GK: David James- the players want him and if it was a Premier league game I’d say stick with Green but we cant afford anymore mistakes and this is the World Cup after all.

RB: Glenn Johnson- there is no one else is there? To be fair he didn’t have a bad game either.

CB: John Terry- Love him or loathe him he is the best central defender we have.

CB: Michael Dawson- May not be the quickest but he is quicker than Carragher and we need pace at the back. Had an excellent season for Spurs and unlucky not to make the original squad.

LB: Ashley Cole- the best Left-back in the World bar none and a definite starter.

DM: Gareth Barry- if he’s fit he plays simple as that.

RM: Aaron Lennon- pace to burn and the Algerians wont fancy playing against him.

LM: Joe Cole-produces class passes out of nothing and has an eye for goal as well.

CM: Frank Lampard-Scores goals for fun for Chelsea, could be an ideal game for him to start scoring again for England.

AMC: Steven Gerard- Lets play him for once where he can do the most damage, supporting Rooney up front with runs from midfield.

SC: Wayne Rooney-There is no one better is there? Lets play him in his lone role position which he does so effectively for Manchester United.

So I would go with a 4-1-3-1-1 formation. A defensive midfielder to help at the back if needed, a three man midfield to control the game, ending with Gerard helping Rooney and taking advantage of him holding up the play. Lets try it for the first half and if it doesn’t work remove Lampard and throw on Defoe or Crouch. Drop Gerrard into midfield alongside Barry and push Cole and Lennon wide.

I believe this formation will be enough to make sure that we win the game and take the needed three points. So over to you Mr Capello…
