Clint Dempsey’s deadline day move to Tottenham

Over the past few weeks Clint Dempsey has been trying to secure a move away from Craven Cottage, he has refused to play for Fulham to help his  chances but it just gave him a bad name in the press.  The transfer went down to the wire on deadline day, it was believed that Dempsey wanted to move to Anfield to get to play European football.

However on deadline day for Dempsey it didn’t start how he expected it to, with Aston Villa having a bid of £7m accepted by Fulham. But Dempsey declined the offer to move to Villa Park to get his move to Liverpool later in the day. As the day progressed, it looked more and more likely Dempsey wouldn’t move at all, let alone move to Anfield.

At lunch time, Liverpool made a formal offer of £3m but it was less than half of the asking fee so Fulham declined the offer.  It looked for all the world that Dempsey’s dream move to the Kop wouldn’t be happening.

Later on in the day, Sunderland were rumoured to be leading the race for the American but they made no offer to purchase Dempsey at all. The winger was desperate to move to Liverpool, but it was later confirmed by the club that they wouldn’t offer any more than £3m. That was the time that Tottenham were the favourites to land him, with their bid for him rumoured to be accepted by the south London club.

As the window was drawing to a close, Dempsey was on the verge of completing a move to Spurs, but nobody knew if the move would be completed in time.  It was later announced in the early hours of Saturday morning that Dempsey had completed his move to White Hart Lane and signed a 3 year deal and he will wear the number 10 shirt, which was left vacant by Rafael Van Der Vaart. The fee has been rumoured to be around the £6m pound mark.

I think Dempsey is a really good player, but I can’t see him playing at Spurs with the quality of Bale and Lennon . I can only see him playing if AVB changes his formation or either Bale, Lennon or Adebayor is injured. Dempsey later described his move to White Hart Lane as a dream come true. So we all know he has a lot of dreams playing for different clubs.

I feel that Dempsey tried to seal his move away from Craven Cottage in the wrong way, because what would have happened if he didn’t finalise a move away. He wouldn’t be allowed to come back in the squad, the fans would be on his back if he eventually did come back. He was getting paid thousands of pounds, so the least he could he could do is try his best for the club.  He could have just asked the manager politely for a move away from the club and it could have got sorted sooner and a lot less drama. It came across as he was sulking to force a move like a toddler.
