Connor Wickham – Why the hype?

Connor Wickham, the latest player to be branded the next big thing. I really do not understand why. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a big lad for 17 and he’s quick but for a striker 4 goals in 28 games in the Championship is nothing to shout home about. I know a lot of these appearances are sub appearances but still, it’s not the sign of a £10m player.

I remember a certain young Dave Nugent banging in goals left right and centre for Preston North End in the Championship, having a much better record than £10m rated Connor Wickham. He got his move to the Premier League and has failed to make any sort of impact at Portsmouth, or his loan move to Burnley. I think this lad has got a lot more hype than deserved from a month of good form when he scored 3 in 4 and got young player of the month.

There are several other strikers within the Championship who have fantastic goal records such as Michael Chopra but they are valued at nowhere near £10m. I know age is taken into consideration but is a player really worth £10m after scoring 4 league goals for a Championship side, and scoring a brace against a League Two side in a League cup clash?

My opinion may not be the greatest on the lad as I’ve only seen him play a few times admittedly, but I just cannot justify any club paying £5m for Connor Wickham, let alone £10m. English clubs really need to take a look at themselves realise what sort of money they’re branding around the place for average players. You just have to look no further than the recent speculation regarding James Milner. Good player but £30m, I don’t think so.

Don’t get me wrong I might be completely wrong and this lad really will be the next big thing, and go on to have a long successful career both internationally and in the Premier League, I certainly look forward to seeing the youngster play a few more times to see if he can justify his own hype.
