Brendan Rodgers addressed Celtic star Daizen Maeda’s contract situation – as he was forced to laugh off a baffling fan theory.
The Hoops manager has been hoping to tie the Japanese frontman down to a new contract at Parkhead despite his current deal running until 2027.
Rodgers wanted to reward Maeda for his incredible form last season where he banged in 33 goals from 51 appearances in all competitions. He also chipped in 12 assists in that time as he switched from wide left to through the middle during Adam Idah’s barren spell.
Maeda has since been linked with a possible move to Brentford who face losing Yoane Wissa but his manager provided fans with an update on their favourite earlier today ahead of his side’s Premier Sports Cup tie vs Falkirk on Friday.
Brendan Rodgers feels Daizen Maeda will stay at Celtic
“Daizen’s obviously got a couple of years (left on his current deal). There have been discussions and that going on in the background but I don’t have any sort of updates on it,” the Irishman said.
“He’s been here four years, he’s progressed every year he’s been here and finished off a brilliant season for him.
“I think what you always get with Daizen is 100 percent. He’s not quite up to full speed yet but no, I don’t know of any developments on that.”
Celtic fans have become impatient this transfer window with a lack of signings being paraded through the gates at Paradise. It comes amid Celts’ interest in Andy Irving of West Ham.
Punters argue that the £20million brought in for the sales of Nicolas Kuhn and Gustaf Lagerbielke have not been spent properly with just £3m of talent arriving – albeit including Kieran Tierney on a free.
Rodgers has never been shy in sending messages to the Hoops boardroom to demand new signings but one supporter theory was laughed out of the Lennoxtown building this week.
Celtic fans furious with lack of transfer business
The manager was pictured on the sidelines of Celtic’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen last weekend without a tie or belt to accompany his suit.
Incredibly, some punters felt that was the boss showing apathy towards his job in a subtle dig at the money-men that if they don’t sign players, he won’t work as hard.
Rodgers was fed back that rumour as he met the media, and he laughed his fill.
“It’s unbelievable. Someone has told me this here,” Rodgers chuckled. “I’m supposedly sending messages – it’s unbelievable!
“I’m basically like everyone else. See when it’s really hot, you either take off your jacket or your tie. See when it’s really cold, you wear a jumper. I remember last year I wore a jumper and people said ‘he’s sending a message.’
Rodgers forced to laugh off bizarre Celtic boardroom message theory
“What message? It’s bloody freezing!
“I had a jumper on and my big coat and it was up to there and I’m fine. There’s two grounds I’ve realised in my career that are absolutely boiling. If you get it at the time and the sun’s hitting your dugout – Pittodrie and Preston, Deepdale.
“I went there once before and I got absolutely roasted on the day and Pittodrie is the same, the sun hits you.
“So I thought ‘I better take off my jacket or take off my tie.’
“So I took my tie off, I don’t know what message that is, I’m just warm!”
