Newcastle United have confirmed David Hopkinson as their new chief executive this afternoon.
The Canadian businessman was announced as the club’s newest chief as he replaced Darren Eales, who announced last year he would step down after being diagnosed with a form of chronic blood cancer.
Mr Hopkinson will officially take the reins tomorrow, September 5, and will “undertake a comprehensive handover process” while being supported by the outgoing Eales.
Newcastle United are in a good spot for Hopkinson arriving in the door. The club are financially strong following the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s takeover in 2021. Under the guidance of manager Eddie Howe the club have established themselves a European regular and will compete in this season’s Champions League proper.
Hopkinson also arrives after the transfer window has already concluded with a massive spend of around £250million in the summer. Their outgoings, too, brought in plenty of cash with an income of close to £150m.
Who is Newcastle United new Chief Executive David Hopkinson?
So he does not have to deal with the Alexander Isak transfer saga which finally took care of itself on Monday night.
But who exactly is David Hopkinson? Where has he come from and what has he done? That is the sort of questions fans will no doubt be asking themselves and looking to learn about their new man in charge.
We have had a look and will try to provide the answers.
Hopkinson has a wealth of experience in sports business having previously headed business operations for the New York Knicks and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Sports.
The club this afternoon confirmed that their new CEO boasts more than 25 years of senior executive leadership across three different countries where he has developed expertise in commercial and sports roles.
As well as working with MSG, the business savvy Hopkinson also has some experience in football, too.
He has worked with Real Madrid as their Global Head of Partnerships and served on the exec team as Los Blancos became one of the world’s most valuable football clubs.
What Hopkinson has said about becoming Newcastle CEO
He also spent more than two decades as the Chief Commercial Officer for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment which involved keeping control of commercial activities for Ice Hockey giants the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.
It is safe to say Hopkinson is well equipped to lead Newcastle United off the field, especially in their financial and commercial sectors.
He will also likely have a major say in the club finding a new full-time sporting director following the shock departure of Paul Mitchell.
Speaking to the club’s website, Hopkinson vowed to get stuck right in and told of his excitement at taking on the gig.
“I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club’s history,” he said.
“This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.
“Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.
“I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world’s elite clubs.”
