How Many Barcelona Games Will Frenkie de Jong Miss After Red Card Against Real Madrid

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona beat Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid 3-2 in the Supercopa de Espana final to claim the first trophy of the 2025/26 season.

Raphinha claimed the Man of the Match award after scoring a brace, with Robert Lewandowski scoring the other goal for the Catalans.

Vinicius Jr. and Gonzalo Garcia scored for Los Blancos, but could not help improve Real Madrid’s head-to-head record in finals against Barcelona.

It was not all good news for Barca, as captain Frenkie de Jong was sent off for a foul on Madrid substitute Kylian Mbappe.

De Jong Sees Straight Red For Foul on Mbappe in Spanish Super Cup

Fans were treated to a five-goal thriller as Barcelona recorded a historic win over Real Madrid on Sunday night.

Raphinha scored the third goal for Barcelona in the 73rd minute, leaving Real Madrid with a deficit to overcome in the final 20 minutes of the game. Kylian Mbappe came off the bench in the final 15 minutes to put pressure on the leaders.

In stoppage time, Mbappe tracked back into his own half to snatch the ball away from Lamine Yamal. The Frenchman won possession and had only gone on the offensive when Frenkie de Jong lunged in to dispossess him.

The Dutchman mistimed his challenge and caught Mbappe’s leg with his studs open. The referee had a clear view of the incident and showed the midfielder a straight red card.

De Jong to Miss Barcelona’s Copa del Rey Clash With Racing Santander

Depending on severity, a straight red card results in a one or two-game suspension in Spanish football. A one-game ban is common for professional fouls, with longer suspensions reserved for dangerous infractions.

The referee did not find malicious intent in De Jong’s tackle on Mbappe. As a result, he will have to sit out only one game for Sunday’s red card.

The Barcelona captain has to serve the suspension in the next domestic game, against Racing Santander in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 on Thursday night.

Racing compete in the second division of the Spanish league system and are the obvious underdogs going into the fixture. With De Jong ruled out, Hansi Flick could offer the midfield role to Marc Casado or Marc Bernal.

De Jong will be eligible for selection when Barcelona travel to San Sebastian for Sunday’s LaLiga clash with Real Sociedad.

The 28-year-old has played 23 games for Barcelona in all competitions this season, claiming four assists.
