Deadline Day excitement at the Emirates! – Arsenal’s New Signings

It’s a rarity for Arsenal fans to experience established, world class footballers joining the club. It’s not our policy, proven by our record transfer being £16m. However there is an incredible buzz going around the Emirates at the moment, as we seem ready to spend our reported £70m war chest on a flurry of top class players! We have apparently made a £42.5m bid for Real Madrid’s German midfielder Mesut Ozil, and are still interested in players like Yohan Cabaye, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria. Arsenal fans must be pinching themselves!

Throughout the transfer window we have been linked with plenty of players. Not only world class players such as Luis Suarez, but players who would fill the roles we need depth in. I’m talking about Julio Cesar, Ashley Williams, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Luis Gustavo to name a few. Despite interest in all of these players, we haven’t followed up with any concrete offers, meaning they have stayed at their current clubs or joined another club instead. Personally I would have loved to see Geoffrey Kondogbia at Arsenal, unfortunately that deal failed to materialise.

We have signed two free transfers in Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini. Like any Arsenal fan I can see why this wouldn’t excite many fans, however these were clever deals by Wenger. I thought Flamini was one of our best players Sunday vs. Spurs, getting stuck in, making tackles, organising and talking to the team! He’s a winner, a leader, and has all the tools needed to play at Arsenal, and on a free transfer I believe this to be a fantastic signing. Time will tell with Sanogo but I have heard and seen lots of positive things about him recently, so let’s hope he’s another piece of coal found by Wenger that is squeezed into a diamond.

Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano has officially joint the club on loan and will provide much needed competition for Wojciech Szczesny for the number 1 jersey. I believe this to be a good move, as we will be signing an experienced goalkeeper who has represented Italy at every level on a season long loan, therefore still being able to spend our money on outfield positions.

Mesut Ozil is the subject of a £42.5m bid from Arsenal, and this has less than 12 hours to be pushed through! I can safely say this would be the first time we have really replaced Cesc Fabregas. I recently posted an article about why Arsenal need Juan Mata. This signing may not be Mata but it is a player of the same, if not greater ability in a position I believe needs strengthening. This deal has created an amazing buzz around Arsenal fans, but we need to keep our feet grounded as this deal has not yet gone through.

Also, this deal will not solve all of our problems. I am not trying to put any negative on the Mesut Ozil deal, just being realistic. Our squad is extremely thin at the moment, proven by our bench yesterday in our victory over Spurs. Yes, Ozil will inject more quality into our squad, however we still need to strengthen throughout the day.

A goalkeeper is being signed which I believe is needed. I believe we need to strengthen at centre back, possibly a defensive midfielder as well, as we have been chasing one throughout summer. However, Flamini is extremely versatile and can play as a defensive midfielder or full back, therefore Wenger may not consider this a top priority any more. We are thin on the wings and up front and with Podolski and Chamberlain injured, Walcott and Giroud are our only established winger and striker. We have been interested in forward players all summer, so I’m hoping we get at least one today!

I am excited as I have ever been on Deadline Day, and I don’t see these transfers from Arsenal being panic buys! Let’s hope come 11 o’clock tonight we have a stronger squad, a hefty amount of money spent on players and an extremely happy set of fans!
