Some were expected, while others were pleasant surprises, but each left an everlasting mark on the global game. Take a stroll down memory lane with us, as we revisit the moments that made 2025 an unforgettable year for the game.

The Moments That Defined World Football in 2025

Saudi Pro League Influence Continues to Grow

Cristiano Ronaldo started the great Saudi Arabian migration in January 2023, when he left his life in Europe for a “new challenge”.

The following summer, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Neymar joined the Portuguese, establishing the Saudi Pro League as a practical option for footballers past their prime.

This summer, the Saudi top flight demonstrated its ability to compete with the biggest leagues for prominence, prizing some top players away from Europe.

Italian centre-forward Mateo Retegui (25) left Atalanta for Al-Qadsiah. The Bergamo side pocketed €68.25 million, while the 2024/25 Serie A top scorer agreed to a four-year deal worth €20 million per year.

Darwin Nunez (26) also moved to Saudi Arabia, with Liverpool accepting a €53 million bid from Al Hilal. Nunez reportedly earns around €24.3 million in Riyadh.

Joao Felix (25) is another high-profile player to accept a Saudi Arabian contract. He has joined his compatriot Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. He earned Chelsea €30 million in transfer fees and secured a €17.5 million/year deal, doubling his wages.

Kingsley Coman (29), Theo Hernandez (27), Gabri Veiga (23), and Aymeric Laporte (31) also made the switch.

Lionel Messi Visits India

In December, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi embarked on an event-packed tour of India, visiting Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Gujarat, and Delhi. His Inter Miami teammates and friends, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, accompanied him.

In Kolkata, Messi unveiled a statue of himself, which is six times bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo’s. He interacted with Indian sporting icons Sunil Chhetri and Sachin Tendulkar, met some of the most prominent businessmen and politicians, and even attended a ‘puja’ in Gujarat.

As it was a promotional and fan engagement tour, Messi did not take his talents to the pitch. However, he has vowed to return and possibly participate in a friendly.

PSG Win the Treble

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were the most formidable team of 2025. After spending well over a billion Euros and suffering heartbreaks year after year, PSG finally managed to win the UEFA Champions League at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Beating Brest (10-0), Liverpool (4-1 on penalties), Aston Villa (5-4), and Arsenal (3-1), PSG set up a date with Inter Milan in the final. The Parisians made light work of the Italians, inflicting a 5-0 defeat upon them.

Ligue 1 was pretty much a one-horse race for PSG. Despite dropping eight points in their last five matches, PSG won the league by 19 points.

The Coupe de France final also went in PSG’s favour. They beat Reims 3-0 to claim their 16th French Cup.

Chelsea Emerge as the Best Club in the World

For the first time ever, 32 teams across the world competed in a vastly revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

It was a month-long extravaganza. The teams were divided into eight groups of four, with the top two finishers in each group qualifying for the Round of 16.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Manchester City, and Bayern Munich were the favourites going into the Club World Cup. However, defying predictions, Chelsea emerged as the best in the world.

PSG beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the quarter-finals before claiming a commanding 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

The Champions League winners were the overwhelming favourites to claim the trophy in the final. But Chelsea flipped the script, claiming a mega 3-0 win over the French side.

Cole Palmer scored a brace, and Joao Pedro added the third to kill the game before the half-time whistle. Owing to his heroics, Palmer was named in the FIFA World XI, while Erling Haaland missed the cut.

Arne Slot Wins the Premier League in His Debut Season

Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the 2023/24 season came as a massive blow for Liverpool fans, as very few expected his successor, Arne Slot, to match his standards.

However, Slot exceeded expectations in his debut season, guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title. Under his tutelage, the Reds finished on 84 points – 10 ahead of Arsenal in second.

Mohamed Salah emerged as the standout performer in the Premier League. Winning the Golden Boot with 29 goals and the Playmaker Award with 18 assists.

Liverpool’s title defence, however, is not going nearly as well as they had hoped. They are currently in fourth place with 32 points after 18 Gameweeks. Arsenal are currently leading the pack with 42 points.

Alexander Isak Sets Premier League Record

After the tragic death of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz’s departure to Bayern Munich, Liverpool entered the summer transfer window in search of prolific attackers.

They signed Florian Wirtz for a record €125 million and Hugo Ekitike for €95 million before splurging another €145 million on Alexander Isak.

The transfer made the Swedish forward the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, surpassing the record Wirtz set earlier in the summer.

So far, the move has not paid off for the Merseysiders. The former Newcastle United striker has only scored twice in 10 Premier League matches and is set to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Isak suffered a serious leg injury against Tottenham Hotspur and could miss the remainder of the season.

Lamine Yamal Becomes the Most Valuable Player in the World

Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has burst onto the scene in the last couple of years, setting pretty much every record for his age group.

Yamal has outperformed Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, registering more goal contributions than they had at 18. The two-time Kopa Trophy winner finished second in the Ballon d’Or race and booked a place in the FIFA Men’s World XI.

Yamal, who has scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 14 LaLiga matches this season, has unmatched potential. And most sports outlets believe there is no one more valuable than the Spaniard.

According to Transfermarkt, Yamal is currently valued at €200 million. Statista, meanwhile, believes he is worth around €400 million – €160 million more than Erling Haaland in second place.

Barcelona, of course, have no intention of selling him. Not unless someone triggers his €1 billion release clause.

Kylian Mbappe Matches Cristiano Ronaldo’s Record

Real Madrid did not have a 2025 to remember. Barcelona left Madrid behind in LaLiga, Arsenal knocked them out of the Champions League, and PSG inflicted a 4-0 defeat upon them in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Most of their superstars failed to live up to expectations, with Kylian Mbappe being the only exception.

Acting as the team’s focal point in attack, the Frenchman scored 59 goals for Real Madrid in 2025, matching the record Ronaldo set in 2013.

Mbappe scored five hat-tricks and 11 braces for Los Merengues. Twelve of his goals came from the penalty spot.

Ousmane Dembele Becomes the Best Player in the World

The majority of the footballing world had written Ousmane Dembele off after his disastrous spell with Barcelona.

Following his €148 million move from Borussia Dortmund, Dembele scored only 40 goals and provided 42 assists in 185 games. He regularly made headlines for his injuries and

In the summer of 2023, Dembele joined PSG from Barcelona in a €50 million move. In the 2024/25 season, he led from the front as PSG won the Treble.

Dembele scored 35 goals and provided 15 assists for Les Parisiens in 49 games across competitions. Luis Enrique openly campaigned for him to win the Ballon d’Or.

Enrique’s wish came true in September as the Frenchman lifted the Golden Ball. Then in December, FIFA recognised him as The Best Men’s Player in the world.
