Kylian Mbappe was the most prolific forward in world football in 2025.
The Real Madrid star scored 59 times in 59 games for his club in what was by far the best calendar year of his career in terms of goals.
His previous best was 44 in 2022 when he was still playing for Paris Saint-Germain.
Kylian Mbappe equals Cristiano Ronaldo’s calendar year goals record
Mbappe’s haul of 59 goals in 2025 saw him equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s calendar year club record, after the Portuguese icon also netted 59 times for Real Madrid in 2013.
The Frenchman’s record-equalling 59th strike came in Real’s final game of 2025 when he converted an 86th-minute penalty in a 2-0 win over Sevilla. The 27-year-old celebrated by performing Ronaldo’s most famous celebration.
He later said: “It’s my first year of doing something like Cristiano, my idol, the best player in the history of Real Madrid and a reference point in world football. It’s an honour for me.
“I wanted to give him a nod because he’s always been very affectionate towards me. He’s always spoken very highly of Madrid and how to adapt. I’m very happy to score goals for Real Madrid and to win the match.”
Barcelona and Man City couldn’t stop Mbappe scoring, but Arsenal did
Six of Mbappe’s 59 club goals in 2025 came against Barcelona across four Clasicos – although Real lost three of them.
Mbappe also netted four times in two games against Manchester City. Meanwhile, the only two teams he faced at least twice and failed to score against in 2025 were Arsenal and Juventus.

No silverware to show for Mbappe’s 59 goals… yet
Despite scoring 59 goals in 2025, Mbappe did not lift a trophy with Real Madrid during the calendar year.
Barcelona finished 10 points clear of Real in the 2025 calendar year La Liga table, despite Mbappe’s 39 league strikes. Barca were crowned champions of Spain in the 2024/25 season by a margin of four points and are currently four points clear in the 2025/26 title race.
Real also lost out to Barca in the 2024/25 edition of the Copa del Rey, with Mbappe scoring in a 3-2 defeat in the final. It was a similar story in the 2025 Spanish Super Cup, with Mbappe opening the scoring in the final before Barca went on to beat Real 5-2.
However, Mbappe’s fine scoring form in 2025 could yet result in him lifting some silverware in 2026. His goals have kept Real in touch in the title race, while his Champions League form helped them reach the knockout phase.

Calendar year world record still belongs to Lionel Messi
Despite matching Ronaldo’s best-ever year in terms of club goals and now sharing Real Madrid’s club record, Mbappe fell short of the all-time world record. That still belongs to Lionel Messi, who scored 79 times for Barcelona in 2012.
But Mbappe was 2025’s top scorer by a significant margin. Second was Harry Kane with 51 goals in 56 games for Bayern.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi delivered 43 goals in 49 appearances for Inter Miami. Messi also delivered 25 assists.
Slightly further back was Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who netted 40 times in 46 club outings. Cristiano Ronaldo also enjoyed another prolific year for Al-Nassr, scoring 33 goals in 37 games as his side finished 2025 top of the Saudi Pro League, with the competition’s record points tally in their sights.
