Domenech to name provisional squad

Nicholas Anelka was one of the players that was named in the provisional squad for World Cup 1998, which France won. However, he did not make it into World Cup squad, and expressed his feelings of disppointment at being left out when he was already dreaming of wearing the blue shirt at the 1998 event.

Ten years have passed since then and Raymond Domenech is now the manager of Les Blues. As the 2007/08 season has unfolded, Domenech is forced to employ the same system once again, for the benefit of the French national team. The deadline for the initial squad submission is the 18th May, with the squad being reduced to 23 players on the 28th May. As it stands, 18 French players still have club games to play after the 18th May. This is due to the UEFA Champions League final between Man Utd (Evra, Saha, Silvestre) and Chelsea (Anelka again, Malouda and Makelele), the French Cup and the Italian Super Coppa between Inter and Roma.

This means that Domenech has too many worries regarding the fitness of his players to rush into naming his final 23 early on the 18th May, even though this may mean disappointment for some of the lads who do not make it into the final squad. France’s first game of Euro 2008 is against Romania on the 9th June.
