Dwight McNeil’s partner has accused Crystal Palace of showing little regard for his mental health after the winger’s proposed move from Everton collapsed late on deadline day.
A loan deal with an obligation to buy for around £20 million had been agreed, but Palace pulled out after failing to complete paperwork in time, despite submitting a deal sheet to extend the deadline.
Dwight McNeil Crystal Palace transfer collapses on deadline day
McNeil was set to join Palace on a long-term contract running until 2030 and had already completed a medical.
Everton had given the green light, and preparations were underway for the 26-year-old to make the switch.
However, after requesting extra time from the Premier League to finalise the move, Palace withdrew without explanation – possibly linked to Jean-Philipe Mateta’s collapsed move to AC Milan.
The decision left McNeil in limbo and forced him to remain at Everton, where he has played a reduced role under David Moyes this season.
McNeil’s partner criticises Palace over mental health impact
McNeil’s girlfriend, Megan Sharpley, spoke out on social media, describing the emotional toll of the failed move and accusing the club of “messing” with his wellbeing.
She said promises were made and then withdrawn without communication, adding that the experience had left McNeil “brokenhearted with nothing but confusion”.
She wrote, “Tonight, and the last 48 hours, have broken my heart to see how the football world you love so much can be so cruel to you.
“To have something promised to you, to have been dragged along on an emotional roller coaster and to be toyed with until the final minute, to have 4 and a half years of your life promised to you, travelling, medicals, arrangements made, promises made, to have prepared to move your life, our life, 100s of miles away in the space of a few hours.
“For that to be torn away from you at the last second with absolutely no explanation, going from everything to radio silence, no phone call, no communication, and be left brokenhearted with nothing but confusion, has hurt more than I can say.
“We live in a world where everyone is aware of how big a problem mental health is. So, in football, why do we find it acceptable because these young men are on a lot of money and that’s okay to mess and toy with their mental health and that it’s just part of the job? No matter of money, we all deserve to be treated with respect, kindness, and fairly.
“So I really question the industry tonight. I only hope that there’s more done in the future to protect people from situations like what I’ve witnessed tonight. Football is brutal, and yes, it’s the nature of the beast, but messing with human beings’ feelings and emotions shouldn’t be acceptable.
“People only see one side in the media, you don’t see the tears, the emotion and the distress, I have seen tonight.”
Crystal Palace transfer drama again
This is the second transfer deadline day in a row where Palace have been involved in a late transfer breakdown.
In September, the club agreed a £35 million deal to sell Marc Guehi to Liverpool, only for chairman Steve Parish to pull out while the defender was undergoing a medical.
Guehi eventually left Selhurst Park last month, joining Manchester City on significantly higher wages, albeit for a lower fee of £20 million.
The repetition of such situations has led to renewed scrutiny of Palace’s approach in high-pressure negotiations.
Dwight McNeil set to remain at Everton
McNeil will now continue his season at Everton, with Sharpley reaffirming their commitment to the club and thanking Everton for the support shown during a difficult period in their personal lives.
“The support we’ve had from [Everton] especially during my illness has meant a lot on our journey, so let’s keep grinding, keep working and grafting for this badge. Let’s keep going Dwight, show them who you are. I’m right by your side.”
