Eintracht Frankfurt count cost of Dino Toppmöller dismissal as price of appointing Marco Rose becomes clear

Eintracht Frankfurt Marco Rose

Eintracht Frankfurt could be faced with a seven-figure compensation bill if they are to appoint Marco Rose as head coach following the dismissal of Dino Toppmöller.

Frankfurt parted ways with Toppmöller at the weekend following a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen that leaves them seventh in the Bundesliga, six points outside the Champions League places. The club has conceded 39 goals in 18 league games this season, the joint worst record in the division.

Rose was dismissed from RB Leipzig last March following a two-and-a-half-year tenure during which he won the German Cup and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, and qualified for the Champions League with a third-place finish in the Bundesliga.

The 49-year-old has emerged as an early frontrunner for the Frankfurt job, but remains under contract at the Red Bull Arena until the end of June.

How much would Frankfurt have to pay to land Marco Rose?

Estimates of the compensation Leipzig would be due in the event of an early termination of the deal vary, but it is understood the fee would be in the region of €1m (£872,000).

A further complication centres around whether Rose would be willing to forego the remaining salary he is due from his hometown club. It is believed the contract extension the German signed in the summer of 2024 was worth roughly €4.5m annually, meaning he is owed about €2m.

Rose heads a shortlist of candidates also rumoured to include former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic,Roger Schmidt, who counts Bayer Leverkusen, PSV and Benfica among his previous managerial appointments, and Xabi Alonso, who left Real Madrid barely a week ago.

Rose suggested last October that, though eager to resume his managerial career, he was content to bide his time for the right position.

What has Marco Rose said about his future?

“I definitely want to get back on the bench, but it doesn’t have to be today, tomorrow, or the day after,” said Rose. “I believe the day will come. You’ll certainly see me back on a training ground and in the stadium.

“It just has to be right, and maybe this time it’s going to be abroad.”

Rose is reportedly interested in taking over at the Waldstadion, however, suggesting his next role could be closer to home than he imagined.

What have Frankfurt said about the identity of the next manager?

In the meantime, Frankfurt’s under-21 manager Dennis Schmitt will take charge of the team for Wednesday night’s Champions League games against Azerbaijani side Qarabağ. Schmitt, who will be assisted by under-19 coach Alexander Meier and Toppmöller’s assistant Jan Fiesser, will remain in place until a permanent appointment is made, said Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche.

“Dennis Schmitt is head coach until further notice, there is nothing more to say about that,” said Krösche. “Our goal is to play in Europe. We want to appoint someone as coach who of course lets his team play attacking and bold football, and who is also able to develop players.”

It is understood that Frankfurt, who recently loaned French striker Elye Wahi to Nice, are nonetheless hopeful of making a permanent appointment before this weekend’s home game against Hoffenheim.
