England Strategy vs Sweden

Finally Jack Wilshere is back!

England have got a very tricky but interesting friendly against Sweden coming up, so who should play? And what formation should they use?

I should state at this point that Hodgson will certainly play a 4-4-2 formation, but let us forget about this and fantasise about what formation we could play with some of the more creative players at our disposal. The reason I mentioned Wilshere right off the bat is that he is the key to everything we all think about with regards to the future of England.

I think that England should play either a 4-3-3 formation or a 4-3-2-1. I think that these formations are the future of international football with the emphasis being on possession related play. This is also what the English public is crying out or after some really, really poor possession statistics at the Euros.

My 4-3-3 team for the Sweden game would be as follows:

Hart

 Walker Cahill Jagielka Baines

Gerrard Wilshere Cleverley

Walcott Rooney Young

Whilst I realise than Young is a poor passer of the ball, his pace is excellent and his crossing is valuable. He has also looked very good for Man United since coming back from injury. I think that the three midfield players would have everything but pace which I’m happy to accept based on the pace of the three forwards.

My 4-2-3-1 team for the Sweden game would be as follows:

Hart

Walker Cahill Jagielka Baines

Gerrard Osman

Walcott Wilshere Young

Rooney

Until Parker is back from injury I’m not as happy about this formation, nevertheless I feel that the flexibility of this formation will allow for a lot of creativity and plenty of pace again.

As mentioned earlier Hodgson will certainly play a 4-4-2 formation but if I meet him soon I would ask him to consider the 4-3-3 formation as highlighted earlier which with the single substitution of one of the midfield three for Aaron Lennon could turn into a 4-4-2 with Walcott in his favoured position.

In conclusion I would say that England simply doesn’t have the players of 10-15 years ago. I think it is plain to see. Thus I would have us playing with more complicated formations and more detailed tactics to try to get the best out of the players we have.

Come on England!
