After weeks of the media, fans and pundits discussing what the provisional 30 man England squad would be Fabio Capello has finally told us…..
There are a few surprises (Carragher, Parker, A. Johnson) but apart from that the squad pretty much picked itself. What I have heard alot over the past few months is how this England squad is known as the golden generation, when you have an in depth look at the squad I really can’t see why it’s called the golden generation.
England have a few world class players with Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard (despite his poor form this season), they have some very good players to go with it but nothing that other countries will be frightened of. How on earth is Heskey is that squad?? He has scored 3 goals all season, 4 goals in 58 caps for England…..see the pattern. Then you have the likes of Zamora who’s been in great form for Fulham in the league and in Europe not even in the provisional squad. I know he said he’s going to have a operation but I’m positive that if he was selected he would have put it off for a few months. Also asking Paul Scholes to come back shows that England lack that bit of depth and quality in the centre midfield.
The fact that the pundits are calling this squad the golden generation, yet they say if Rooney gets injured the chances of England progressing in the World Cup are slim…..contradicting themselves slightly.
If there is one team who’s squad be labelled the golden generation then all you have to do is look at the Spain squad, wherever you look they have class all over the pitch. The fact that the 3rd choice goalkeeper is Victor Valdes (who have never won a cap for Spain) says it all. The midfield is spoilt for choice, Xavi, Iniesta, Senna, Fabregas and Alonso are players Capello can only dream of having.
Goalkeepers:Iker Casillas, David De Gea, Diego Lopez, Jose Reina, Victor Valdes.
Defenders:Raul Albiol, Alvaro Arbeloa, Cesar Azpilicueta, Joan Capdevila, Carlos Marchena, Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos.
Midfielders: Xabi Alonso, Sergi Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta, Javi Martinez, Marcos Senna, David Silva, Xavi.
Forwards:Santi Cazorla, Jesus Navas, Juan Manuel Mata, Pedro Rodriguez, Dani Guiza, Fernando Llorente, Alvaro Negredo, Fernando Torres and David Villa.
The names in that squad show the difference in quality between England and Spain, the majority of the Spanish squad play in the Champions League whereas only a minority of the English players play in the Champions League.
